Contrary to popular belief, Baldy Mountain did not earn its name from the lack of trees near its summit. Early records suggest the name actually originated from a unique chapter in Philmont’s history.
In the late 1800s, Baldy Mountain was home to a surprising number of small barber shops operating along the upper slopes and at the summit. These establishments became well known among miners and travelers for offering a signature style, the “Bald Cut.” Over time, the popularity of these barbers and their distinctive service led visitors to refer to the peak simply as “Baldy.”
Remnants of these historic structures can still be spotted just below the final scramble to the summit. While the shops that once stood at the very top have long since been lost to the mountain’s intense winds and harsh conditions, traces of their foundations remain as a quiet reminder of this lesser-known piece of Baldy’s past.
