Volunteer Spotlight: Reta Streker, Project CARE Tutor

Reta has been volunteering with Project CARE as an ESL tutor for 17 years. She loves working with adult learners who demonstrate perseverance and a strong desire to learn. One of her most meaningful moments was when a student shared how much more confident she felt after learning to speak English.

Fun fact: Reta was a teacher for 30 years and truly loved her profession. When she learned about Project CARE, she saw it as a wonderful opportunity to continue doing what she loved—teaching and supporting learners.

Andrea has been volunteering with Project CARE as an ESL tutor since August 2025. She loves watching her adult learner gain confidence each week, forming sentences in English with pride and enthusiasm.

One of her proudest moments was when her student shared that learning English has boosted her self-esteem. She’s now practicing English in everyday places without hesitation—an incredible milestone!

Fun Fact: Andrea’s grandparents were immigrants from Greece, and her maternal grandmother took ESL classes in New York in the 1940s. That family history inspired Andrea to become an ESL tutor and pay it forward.
