The officers, Board of Directors, members and supporters of Believe 31 extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and fellow firefighters of Assistant Chief Ryan Voorhies of the Sylvan Beach Fire Department following his tragic and unexpected passing.

Ryan dedicated more than two decades of his life to the fire and emergency services, answering the call to help others and demonstrating the commitment, leadership and brotherhood that define the volunteer fire service.

When we lose a member of the fire service, the loss is felt far beyond one department or one community. We are reminded that the bonds created through years of answering alarms, training together and serving our neighbors make us one extended fire service family.

During this incredibly difficult time, Believe 31 stands alongside the Voorhies family and the officers and members of the Sylvan Beach Fire Department. We hope they find strength in the tremendous outpouring of support from firefighters and emergency responders throughout Central New York and beyond.

Assistant Chief Voorhies’ service, leadership and dedication to others will not be forgotten.

🔥Esophageal Pre-Cancer Screening Opportunity🔥

Fire service friends, cancer continues to be one of the most serious occupational health threats facing today’s fire service. On Monday, September 21, 2026, firefighters are invited to participate in an Esophageal Precancer Screening Day at Endwell Fire Department, station # 1.

Firefighters have been identified as having a 62% higher risk of developing esophageal cancer, making awareness, early detection, and screening especially important.

The EsoGuard screening process is designed to help identify esophageal precancer so individuals can take appropriate next steps with their healthcare provider.

Before arriving:

* Bring your ID and health insurance card
* No food or drink for two hours prior to arriving
* Those with three or more identified risk factors may be candidates for screening

Risk factors may include chronic GERD, age over 50, male gender, smoking, obesity, family history, and occupational or environmental exposure.

This is another opportunity for members of the fire service to be proactive about their health. We spend countless hours training to protect our communities—taking the time to protect ourselves is just as important.

Get screened. Know your risks. Early detection can make a difference.

Please come out and help support Daniel “Dan” Matychak as he continues his fight against Stage 4 Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

A Spaghetti Dinner Benefit will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, from 1:00–5:00 p.m. at the Elk Lodge, 57 Pierce Drive in Fulton. All proceeds from the benefit will help Dan and his family with medical bills and expenses during his fight.

Dinner includes spaghetti with meatballs, bread and salad. Tickets are $15 presale or $20 at the door, with children 5 and younger free. The afternoon will also include a 50/50, raffles, door prizes, baked goods, a lottery board and more.

As the event quickly approaches, assistance is still needed in various ways to help make this benefit a success. If your fire department, organization, business, or someone you know may be willing to donate, contribute, or otherwise assist with the benefit, please reach out to the contact number listed on the flyer at (315) 572-7079.

The Pennellville Community is rallying around one of its own as Lieutenant Dan Matychak, a dedicated member of the Pennellville Volunteer Fire Dpartment for nearly five years, battles Stage 2 Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the tongue.

The Believe 31 Team has been in contact with the family and those organizing the event to offer our support and assistance in any way possible.

To help ease the financial burden of medical expenses, a Spaghetti Dinner Benefit will be held:
