LIFE SAVING AWARD

On Saturday, April 18th, the Cicero Fire Department hosted our 143rd Annual Installation Banquet at the DoubleTree by Hilton East Syracuse. During the evening’s celebration of the accomplishments of 2025, an unfortunate medical emergency occurred while dinner was being served.

Life Member Ralph Howe began choking on a piece of steak, causing a severe airway obstruction. The emergency was quickly recognized by Firefighter Shawn Hunter, who was seated at an adjoining table.

Without hesitation, Firefighter Hunter immediately sprang into action and performed the Heimlich Maneuver, ultimately dislodging the obstruction and successfully clearing Ralph’s airway.

If not for the quick actions, training, and professionalism displayed by Firefighter Hunter, the outcome of this incident could have been far more tragic.

As a result of his heroic efforts and decisive actions, Firefighter Shawn Hunter was presented with the Cicero Fire Department Lifesaving Award by the Executive Board and Chiefs Office during last night’s May Monthly Business Meeting.

On behalf of the entire department, we congratulate Firefighter Hunter on this well-deserved recognition and thank him for his commitment to protecting the lives of others both on and off the fireground.
