Mexico City marked the 700th anniversary of its founding on Saturday with a celebration of its Indigenous roots. Traditional dancers performed sacred rituals, and artists reenacted the founding of Tenochtitlan in the city’s main square.

The event commemorates the Mexica (Aztec) arrival in the Valley of Mexico in 1325, guided by the legendary sign of an eagle on a cactus—a symbol that now appears on Mexico’s national flag.

President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted that Mexico’s roots run deep before Spanish colonization, calling for an end to racism and greater respect for Indigenous heritage.

While some founding stories are mythic, historians agree the Mexica were master builders and traders who built a powerful empire—until it was conquered by Spain in 1521.
