We hate making posts like this but we need to see change.
TLDR: If the shed is LOCKED, donations are unavailable. We are also requesting monetary donations for open/closed yard signs.
This weekend we shared on social media that the fridge will be closed due to the heat. Thus, we locked the shed doors to ensure no donations were made while the fridge wasn’t running.
Today, when stopping by the fridge to deep clean it and reopen the shed doors, there was a donation left outside the shed. It had extremely perishable foods in it like cottage cheese and other dairy products. It is 100 degrees outside. This food is obviously unsafe to consume and had to be discarded. Putting that food there goes against one of our core values of reducing food waste (and defies all common sense).
Real people use the fridge as a food source. Do not donate food that is unsafe to consume. We rarely have to close the fridge. And when we do, it’s for the safety of the community or maintenance required of the fridge. If the doors to the shed are locked, assume it is unavailable for donations to give or take.
When know not everyone has social media which is why we lock the shed when it’s closed. We have tried to post signs to the fridge acknowledging it’s closed but folks take down the signs for some unknown reason.
🪧 All that to say, we would like to get yard signs for the front of the fridge that acknowledge the location of the community fridge and if it is open or closed.
💵 If would be willing to make a financial donation to assist with the purchase of these signs, please Venmo or via our website: bluecrabcommunitfridges.com/donations
The fridge is also reopened and accepting donations.
Thank you 💙🦀
