We are proud to celebrate Special Day Class Teacher Hezekiah Herrera, Ed.D., at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary, for receiving the 2026 Students with Exceptional Needs Human Rights Award from the California Teachers Association! This recognition highlights his commitment to ensuring students with disabilities have meaningful access to learning, school experiences, and opportunities for independence.

Through his work, Dr. Herrera has developed tools and resources that remove barriers to participation and has also authored children’s literature that reflects the experiences of students with significant disabilities. congratulates Dr. Herrera on this well-deserved honor and thanks him for his continued dedication to expanding opportunities for all students. 💙 Spread the Word Week | Next Week (March 2-6)
SEPAC is partnering with administration and Unified Schools to support Spread the Word (STW), a worldwide movement to end the use of hurtful language and build a more inclusive future for everyone.

📚Spring Scholastic Book Fair | March 9–13
Our final book fair of the year is coming up. It’s a great opportunity to set your student up with some Spring Break reads and help support our classroom libraries! All sales will take place after school, including during conferences. Volunteers are needed to maintain the schedule as planned. Please sign up below to help.

Each month, we celebrate an Owl-Star — a PTA member, volunteer, teacher, or family who goes above and beyond to make Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School such a special place. 💛💙

For October, we’re proud to recognize Desiree Domingo as our Owl-Star! Desiree serves as the Chair of the Special Education Parent Advisory Committee (SEPAC), and her leadership and commitment help make every Snowy Owl feel seen, supported, and valued. 👏

🎃✨ What an incredible Trunk or Treat! A huge thank you to all the parents, teachers, and PTA volunteers who made it happen! 💫

It was such a treat seeing our students and their families dressed up and enjoying each trunk. The costumes, the smiles, the community spirit — absolutely amazing! 👻

Visit our beautiful Ofrendas on display in the indoor amphitheater before school.

Come see the amazing artwork and classroom projects that helped create our very first Día de los Mu***os altar (ofrenda) — a true labor of love from our students and staff. 💛

Muchísimas gracias to the classrooms that participated, our generous PTA, and all the teachers, PTA members, and parent volunteers who helped bring this meaningful celebration to life.

💙💛 What an amazing APEX Fun Run! 💛💙

A huge shoutout to our awesome APEX team: Jurassic Jake, Am Bam, and Crushin Cam for bringing the energy these past two weeks! Our Snowy Owls learned valuable lessons on leadership and character while having a blast. 💪

Big thanks to our teachers for encouraging participation, our admin team for keeping things running smoothly, Mr. Rafa for helping us get set up, and Ms. Letty and the front office crew for working hard to get everyone checked in. 🙌

And of course, we couldn’t have done it without our amazing volunteers, parents, and families who pledged, cheered, and supported our students every step of the way. ❤️

It was a day full of sun, smiles, and Snowy Owl spirit and we are so grateful for all of you!
