As we approach the end of our “administrative” year, we hear more units stating they “hold” membership(s) until the next year. The justification given is they do not want the new member to receive a renewal notice right after they join. This is not doing them any favors.

The best way to handle this situation is always communication and education. Yes, they may receive a renewal notice, but you can explain to them the calendar year memberships versus the administrative year.

When applications are delayed, the applicant is not officially recorded as a member and cannot fully participate in unit activities, voting, or leadership opportunities. Delays also prevent them from accessing member benefits, such as receiving their membership card, participating in programs, and being counted in our membership totals. In some cases, these delays may even cause us to lose potential members who expect timely processing and communication.

Perhaps offer these members an opportunity to pay the department minimum by deducting any unit administrative fee and offer them 2 years at that fee (If your unit allows). They immediately have 2 years membership under their belt!

Prompt processing protects the rights of new members, supports accurate reporting, and helps our unit operate smoothly and consistently.

May is Military Appreciation Month

Here are some notable observances coming up this week:

May 13th-Children of Fallen Patriots Day. Honors the children of military members who died in the line of duty. Established in 2014, this day specifically recognizes the lasting sacrifices of these young individuals.

May 16th-Armed Forces Day. Honors the 1.3 million+ active-Duty Personnel across all 6 branches of the military. This day celebrates their service and dedication to our country.
