As we celebrate Latino Heritage Month, L1GHTH0US3 proudly lifts up the brilliant luminaries of Latino and Hispanic heritage — visionary leaders, fierce advocates, groundbreaking scholars, trailblazing artists, and everyday architects of justice and hope — whose courage, creativity, intellect, and unbreakable spirit continue to reshape our world. Today we shine a light on Fernando Mendoza (United States, of Cuban descent), the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner and quarterback selected first overall by the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2026 NFL Draft — becoming one of the most celebrated Latino athletes in recent American football history.

A Miami native whose grandparents emigrated from Cuba, Mendoza transferred to Indiana and led the Hoosiers to an undefeated season and the program’s first national championship contention. In December 2025 he became Indiana’s first-ever Heisman Trophy winner, then made history again when the Raiders drafted him No. 1 overall. He has proudly spoken about representing the Hispanic community and has used Spanish in public moments to honor his family and roots.

Today we shine a light on Andrés Briseño (Mexico, born circa 2004–2005), the young law student and multi-sport athlete from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, who made history on September 26, 2026, by becoming the first Mexican ever crowned Mister International.

Competing against 51 other representatives from around the world in Bangkok, Thailand, Andrés rose through the stages of the 18th Mister International pageant to claim the title. A student of Law with experience in baseball, archery, basketball, football, swimming, tennis, and golf, he combines athletic discipline with academic focus and national pride. His victory marks a landmark moment for Mexico in international male pageantry.

Born in Bern, Switzerland, Wyss studied at ETH Zurich and later earned an MBA from Harvard. He built Synthes into one of the world’s leading medical-device companies, specializing in implants that helped millions of patients recover faster from fractures and trauma. After selling the company, he turned his focus fully to philanthropy. Today we shine a light on Fátima Bosch (Mexico, born May 19, 2000), the fashion designer and beauty queen from Teapa, Tabasco, who was crowned Miss Universe 2025 — becoming the fourth Mexican woman in history to win the global title and the first from her home state.
Raised in Tabasco, Fátima studied fashion and apparel design at Universidad Iberoamericana and continued her training in Milan and the United States. She has spoken openly about overcoming bullying, dyslexia, and ADHD, channeling those experiences into advocacy and authenticity. This Autumn, as we continue to recognize American Veterans during the 250th anniversary of the birth of our nation, we honor 250 years of stories of heroism by remembering the brave men and women of our military who have fought and continue to fight for our freedoms.

We honor Sergeant Alfredo “Freddy” Gonzalez, U.S. Marine Corps, Medal of Honor recipient.

Born in Edinburg, Texas, Sergeant Gonzalez served two tours in Vietnam. During the Battle of Hue City in the Tet Offensive (January 31 – February 4, 1968), he repeatedly exposed himself to intense enemy fire while leading his platoon. Despite being wounded multiple times, he refused evacuation, carried wounded Marines to safety, destroyed enemy positions with grenades and light anti-tank weapons, and suppressed rocket fire that was pinning down his company. On February 4, he continued fighting until he was mortally wounded.
For his extraordinary gallantry and leadership, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

His selfless courage under fire saved the lives of his fellow Marines and remains one of the most powerful examples of leadership during the Vietnam War. A destroyer, USS Gonzalez (DDG-66), was later named in his honor.
