HOW CAN YOU VOLUNTEER FOR SEARCH AND RESCUE?
If you want to get involved with a Search And Rescue group that is deployable in a natural disaster, I would encourage you to go join a SAR group at a local volunteer fire department. SAR requires training so be prepared for a time commitment. Training is offered free to members of teams. Sometimes the course you need isn’t offered locally so you must be willing to drive somewhere to get training quickly. When you join an official group, you will also be covered under the workers comp policy. Keep in mind that, SAR can be a strenuous activity so you need to be in reasonable physical condition. There will also be a monthly time commitment for regular training. To volunteer for SAR, you don’t get to just put your name on a list and wait for the next local disaster.
* What type of SAR do you want to do?
- Wilderness SAR teams are used during land search for lost/missing people. A few examples of people we search for are lost kids, people with cognitive impairment who wondered away and people lost in the woods while camping, hunting, hiking, etc. We train in tracking, and use K9s, drones, horses, ATVs and help with incident management in command centers.

- USAR teams are given the lead on searches when there are natural disasters that require search in debris fields, structures and searches that require technical training for things like high angle reascue. Many of the same teams are deployed that are used in Wikderness SAR.

- Swift water teams are used during the initial rescue phase in a flood or in other situations when people are being rescued in fast moving water. More information here -> https://www.ncdps.gov/our-organization/emergency-management/em-operations/em-resources/search-rescue/swiftwater-search-rescue
Official teams are ones who are deployable through Emergency Management. If you join a team, you qualify for free SAR training that is necessary to do the job. You will also be covered under workers comp insurance.
In summary, if you are inspired to help, get trained now and join a team. You can’t just walk onto an official team at the moment a disaster has happens. Without training, you are a potential liability.
