We have some big news to share!!!! The truck committee have outdone themselves designing this truck to carry every piece of rescue equipment to serve our residents and guests. Please give a huge hand to them fingers crossed by 2030 the new Rescue Engine 3!!!

Big thanks to Doug Parker who took our wishes with this truck and made them into a truck that will replace not one but two older rigs!

Looks pretty familiar! Thank you Andrew for the great shots!

Pony information:

This afternoon around 1pm we were alerted that a foal had been trampled in the north herd. Upon our cowboys arrival they found foal #71 a newborn, deceased. After speaking with the person who witnessed it, the newborn was not with its mother or its herd. It had wandered to another nearby band, away from its mother Mimi, who was a first time mom. Hidalgo who is Mimi’s stallion, for reasons unbeknownst to us went into the other stallion’s group and aggressively tried to move the foal and in the process caused massive head trauma. Cowboys tried to have the mother approach or at least see the deceased foal but as in many cases with new dams they dissociate.

I want to be clear that this is in no way shape or form a serious behavioral problem, Hidalgo has many foals in his group and has never had a problem with any of them or any other ponies for that matter. Far less than other stallions like Prince, Ajax, or Riptide. These babies are fragile and this foal at under a day old and slightly premature had already been left by its mother for which we likely would have had to intervene anyhow. While not a normal circumstance, stuff like this inevitably happens in the wild it is important that people remember one mis step, one wrong turn, or hours without mom for a foal may be in a life threatening situation. This is a just a freak accident, wild horses can be dangerous, especially to each other, but also to people. This wasn’t the first foal who was killed accidentally and in reality it will not be the last. While sad, it is the reality of life out here, please respect the fact that this was not preventable or predictable and there is no cause for concern.

We had made a note last year to bring in thunderstorm skies due to her losing multiple foals over time. Her and her foal will visit the vet for the time being to ensure their well being and run a few tests.

Incident Report: Accident with Injuries upgraded to Accident with entrapment.

June 5th at 2216 hours Stations 3,4 were alerted for an accident with injury in the area of Mosquito Creek Bridge on Chincoteague Road. While units were enroute the call was upgraded to an accident with entrapment with a vehicle in the water. Ambulance 3-0, Engine 3-4, Rescue 3, and Rescue 4 all responded to the scene. Upon arrival, Chief 3 established command, crews descended to the vehicle and determined that the driver of the vehicle was priority 4. At that time Chief 3 initiated a primary search of the area and advised VDOT and Chincoteague PD to Close Chincoteague Road. Road closure must occur for VSP accident reconstruction teams. We were able to confirm that it was a single occupant with the help of Coast Guard Sector Chincoteague and other resources who were very quick to respond and answer. Virginia State Police, initiated their documentation while a vessel from Virginia Marine Resources Commission was launched and brought to the scene to remove the occupant. Once on scene, removal was able to take place and the occupant was successfully removed from the vehicle and placed into a VMRC vessel for transport from the scene. The crash was then subjected to the medical examiner and state police for investigation. Then the process of vehicle removal started, Barnes Towing was able to get a good pull on the vehicle but the town water line running beside the bridge protruded in the upward path of the vehicle, after a few attempts they were able to get the vehicle up and over the bridge jersey wall. Vehicles were removed, roadway cleaned, units cleared the scene around 0250.

Many thanks goes to Atlantic Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company, their seamless work on any calls is always top notch.

We would also like to thank US Coast Guard station Chincoteague for responding in such a timely manner and assisting in a search for other occupants.

VMRC, responded and utilized their vessel for patient transport back to a dock, in the dark navigating is very difficult and they did an exemplary job in a timely fashion.

We would also like to thank VSP, Barnes Towing, and VDOT for responding and doing their best with a difficult recovery and lengthy incident.

We extend our thoughts to the family and friends of the deceased individual, and to all witnesses involved in this tragic event.
