DNA Update

Tired of waiting for DNA results, I contacted the management at Michigan Technological University telling them about the failure of the University to produce our s**t DNA results. Unfortunately, the scientist who was supposed to be conducting the analyses apparently falsely told her superior that she had already produced the results.

The scientist conducted DNA analyses in 2025 (this is the first I have seen them), but she was supposed to produce a SNP panel to compare northeast canids with eastern wolves from eastern Canada. Instead, she compared our s**t DNA with canids from the Great Lakes region. This was like comparing apples to oranges. The report she produced is both worthless and meaningless.

Apparently, the scientist now says she will produce something. Since she refuses to communicate with me, I have no idea what it is.

My sincerest apologies to everyone who donated money for these analyses. We have asked the university for either the report we paid for, or a refund. We were told by the scientist that we had to pay the $7,500 as a "donation" with nothing of value in return. Of course, the university is balking at returning our/your money because it was a "donation".

We will see what we get for a report, if anything. I am not optimistic that it will be what we paid for. If the scientist had already produced what we paid for, we would have gotten it a long time ago.

For the record, if anyone asks me about having s**t DNA samples analyzed by Michigan Technological University, I will tell them about our horrible experience. Lesson learned.

In the meantime, we've been told that our s**t samples that we sent to the University of Quebec are still being analyzed. These are being done for us at no cost as part of a research project into eastern wolves being conducted by a graduate student. He is at least as anxious to get the results as we are. I expect that the lab analyzing those samples knows what they're doing and is doing it.

An excellent article from the Washington Post

After looking at these videos from Minnesota, I dare anyone to honestly say that we do not have wolves in Maine. It is an absolute disgrace that our state and federal governments continue to do nothing to protect wolves in the northeast.

A new line of research has revealed a surprising finding about how the presence of wolves helps keep people safe.

Happy New Year!

I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season. Winter got off to an early start here in Maine with a couple of springlike days sandwiched in between snow and cold weather.

2025 was a mixed bag for wolves in the U.S. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that they would not be developing a National Gray Wolf Recovery Plan. Thankfully, that announcement was met with an announcement that the Center for Biological Diversity would file a lawsuit challenging the decision. We have offered to help CBD with any portion of the lawsuit dealing with wolves in the northeast.

In the plus column, wolves continue to be protected under the Endangered Species Act-at least for the time being. There have been no wolf hunts in the Great Lakes states-at least for the time being. Red wolves in North Carolina have been doing reasonably well with no known recent mortalities.

Here in the northeast, there have been no changes. The laws still promote the killing of wolves by promoting the killing of our coyote/wolf hybrids. Based on our camera trap observations, many of Maine's large canids are living normal lives, despite the fact that thousands of them are killed by hunters and trappers annually.

2026 should finally bring us some of the s**t DNA results we have been waiting so long to receive. 2026 will bring us another gubernatorial election. As a candidate for governor, I promise to reform the Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to make it democratic and to give everyone a seat at the table. I also promise to end wildlife killing contests and to engage the department in wolf research, education and protection.

MWC has been at this going on 32 years. While we are having an impact on the public's knowledge and attitudes about wolves, the government remains steadfast in its opposition to wolf recovery. This is one reason why I am running for governor.

As a reminder, we still have a few 2026 MWC calendars available for a $25 donation. If you would like one, comment on this post and send a check for $25 to Maine Wolf Coalition, 30 Meadow Wood Drive, South China, ME 04358

Here's a brand-new photo to start off the new year. Yes-it really is an actual photo.

Fifteen Thousand Followers and Counting

WOW!

Many thanks to everyone following our page. Our mission is wolf recovery in Maine through research, education, and protection. The only one of the three we have yet to see any success in is protection. That will come.

As we continue to wait for the DNA results of the s**t we have collected, we are hopeful that we will find more wolves. This will strengthen the case for government action to actually protect them.

It is perfectly legal to kill these little guys. This is just plain wrong.

From our archives

This animal was photographed in a yard in Kingfield in 2021. You can see why we take every sighting report seriously. The animal was uncollared and to our knowledge was never identified.

2023 video

I'm going through many of our photos and videos gathering photos for the 2026 MWC calendar. Here's an interesting animal seen in 2023. It's lean, lanky body is characteristic of Eastern wolves.

Another video

This video of two animals in an urban area of Maine was sent to us. It's impossible to tell the size or age, but their faces are very wolflike. It's also impossible to tell from just a video if they are resident animals or dispersing juveniles just passing through. It's unfortunate that no one in government or academia is doing anything to study Maine's canids. The only thing the government is doing is encouraging people to kill them.

The message we send is that wolves could be anywhere in Maine. They require large territories of tens or hundreds of square miles per pack, but the more abundant the prey, the smaller the required territory size.

It is still illegal to kill wolves in the northeast. It is technically illegal to kill Maine's coyote/wolf hybrids because they are not coyotes. There are no coyotes in Maine and the entire northeast.

These animals are doing what most wild canids do. They are just minding their own business and trying to survive.

Time for 2026 Calendars!

It's that time again! We're getting our 2026 Maine Wolf Coalition wall calendars ready to go to print. Last year's calendars were a sellout, so we encourage you to get your order in early. We will only print a few extra so the number of these unique calendars is very limited. They will make a great Christmas gift for the wolf lover in the family! The photos are all new and all were taken in Maine's north woods stretching from the western mountains to Aroostook County.

If you'd like to order one or more, please mail your donation of $25 for each calendar to; Maine Wolf Coalition, 30 Meadow Wood Drive, South China, ME 04358

Thank you!

Here's a new video. How many animals do you see? It sounds like an animal is licking the trail camera.

We've had no guesses as to the number of animals in the video. There are at least three. Look to the very right of the video and you will see a black head and black ears come into the frame.
