PRESS RELEASE

Jefferson County, WA. Recent shellfish samples from multiple locations analyzed by the Washington State Department of Health indicate that the level of biotoxin that causes paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) has dropped below the closure limit for all species of clams, oysters and mussels. The opening includes beaches in Port Townsend Bay, Admiralty Inlet, Marrowstone Island, Kilisut Harbor and Mystery Bay. Previously, the area was closed for harvesting for all species of shellfish due to PSP. Jefferson County Public Health has removed warning signs from public access points. Please note however, that the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) recreational shellfish season is closed at Mystery Bay State Park. Fort Flagler State Park is open, and Kinney Point State Park is open all year, but is only accessible by boat. Chimacum Tidelands is open north of Chimacum Creek, but is closed to the south due to persistent bacterial pollution from Irondale Creek. Many other beaches in Jefferson County remain closed.

🚧 **Upcoming Road Closure on SR-116 / Ness Road** 🚧

A portion of **SR-116 (Ness Road) in Port Hadlock/Irondale** will be temporarily closed as WSDOT completes a fish passage project.

The closure will affect **SR-116 between Shotwell Place and Chimakum Creek Drive**, so drivers will need to use a detour during construction.

**Detour routes:**

➡️ **From the east side of the closure**
• Heading north: Take **Irondale Road** to SR-19, then turn toward your destination.
• Heading south: Take **Chimakum Road** to SR-19, then turn toward your destination.

⬅️ **From the west end of SR-116**
Follow **SR-19** to either **Irondale Road or Chimakum Road**, then turn toward your destination.

The good news is that **neighborhoods, schools, and businesses along SR-116 will remain accessible throughout the project.**

WSDOT chose a full roadway closure because it allows the work to be completed more quickly, shortening the overall construction timeline.

Please help spread the word so neighbors and visitors know about the detour before heading out. 🚗

Our local farmers markets are amazing. They support small businesses, foster community, provide access to fresh local food, uplift farmers and artisans, and give us a wonderful reason to gather together.

August is an especially abundant time at the markets. Cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, berries, eggplants, herbs, and so much more are at their peak.

And there’s more than produce to enjoy! Throughout August, our local markets are hosting a plethora of joyful, community-centered events. It’s a perfect time to visit, explore what’s in season, meet the people who grow and create locally, and enjoy everything our farmers markets bring to the community.
