February 16th marks Presidents' Day, a federal holiday in the United States. In observance, the Klamath Tribes Administration offices will be closed.

Abraham Lincoln served as President when the Klamath Tribes Treaty was signed on October 14, 1864. Although the treaty was negotiated and signed in 1864, it was not ratified until 1870, during President Ulysses S. Grant’s administration.

After 32 years of consistent advocacy, the Klamath Tribes regained federal recognition with the passage of P.L. 99-398, the Klamath Tribes Restoration Act, signed by President Reagan. This year marks the 40th anniversary of restoration.

On December 21, 2022, President Biden signed the Klamath Tribes Judgment Fund Repeal Act (S. 314) into law. This legislation restored the Klamath Tribes’ self-governance over funds held in trust by the United States government for nearly sixty years.

The Klamath Tribes remain committed to advocating for the Treaty of 1864 and protecting the rights of the ewksiknii (Klamath) | modokknii (Modoc) | neme (Yahooskin Paiute) as granted by the creator, alongside elected leaders across the United States.

During the week of February 9th, Klamath Tribes Chairman Ray Jr. and Secretary Allen will travel to Washington, D.C., continuing the long tradition of Tribal advocacy with presidential administrations throughout United States history.
