Childress County Heritage Museum will be hosting a special dedication at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, unveiling a new historic marker honoring the Childress Army Airfield, a former World War II military airfield, located 4.8 miles west of Childress, which operated as a Bombardier training school for the United States Army Air Forces from 1942-1945.

"This marker commemorates the rich history of the Childress Army Airfield and its impact on our region during a pivotal time in our nation's history," Childress County Heritage Museum Director Niki Seal said. "The unveiling is a tribute to the men and women whose contributions shaped our community and the nation."

Following the dedication, attendees are invited to gather at the museum for light refreshments from noon-2 p.m.

In the case of inclement weather, the event will be hosted at the museum from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

"Come celebrate this exciting moment of preserving and honoring our shared history," Seal said. "We’d love to see you there!"

October is Texas Archeology Month, a celebration of history and heritage through the lens of archeology, and Childress County Historical Commission wants to celebrate it with you.

Childress County Historical Commission is looking at the possibility of hosting Dig Day, an event where guests get the chance to unearth archaeological finds at a local site. Items will then be dated and donated to a state archaeological museum or the local museum. Registration for the two-day event would be $50.

If this is something enough people are interested in, Childress County Historical Commission would love to host the event!
