Work is being done in our area to help preserve the night sky. Alachua County is taking steps that can serve as a guide for Levy County, home to the village. Be sure to stay up to date and help us solve the challenge of light pollution.

A University of Florida fine arts alumnus is helping Alachua County take steps toward restoring darker night skies.

By combining art, technology and NOAA satellite data, Jay Rosen (BFA ’13, UF School of Art + Art History) developed an interactive app that allows users to model how reducing light pollution could improve visibility of the Milky Way over Paynes Prairie while also benefiting wildlife, human health, agriculture and municipal energy costs.

His work is already informing local conversations — and action — around dark sky policy in Alachua County.

Astrofest really flew by but we had a blast and hope you did too. We would love to see your favorite photos of the event and the wonders you were able to capture at night.
Here is an early morning flight around the field, with a few feathered friends passing through.
