Choose Chico Spotlight: Sarah Richardson | The Canine Connection, Chico CA🐾

When Sarah Richardson moved to Chico in 2001, she didn’t just bring her love for teaching and dogs—she brought a vision that would shape the way Chico cares for its canine companions. A retired college professor, lifelong animal lover, and pioneering entrepreneur, Sarah is the founder and heart behind The Canine Connection, now in its 24th year of offering positive dog training, enrichment daycare, and premium boarding services to Chico-area residents.

Before launching her business, Sarah was on the faculty at Texas A&M, where she also earned her PhD in natural resources management. Her journey into the world of professional dog training began as a passion project alongside Dr. Kay Stephens, a veterinarian and behaviorist. This “hobby” grew into a calling. And when she moved to Chico to teach at California State University, Chico, she quickly realized the community was missing something close to her heart: positive reinforcement dog training.

Enter Deveron, a reactive greyhound she was fostering. While training him in public using a force-free approach (no shock collars or scolding—just treats, trust, and connection), passersby began asking if she could help their dogs too. And just like that, The Canine Connection was born—built not with a business plan, but with love, curiosity, and a deep belief in creating stronger bonds between people and pets.

Sarah has made an indelible mark on Chico. Under her leadership, The Canine Connection has grown into two locations, employs a team of 25, and has raised tens of thousands of dollars for local shelters and rescues. Her business has served multiple generations of both humans and dogs. Clients who took her classes 20 years ago are now enrolling their children and family pets—testament to the deep trust and loyalty Sarah has earned in this community.

But her impact goes far beyond her business. She’s mentored young professionals, worked closely with Chico Animal Shelter, helped launch the beloved Walk Woof Wag event (which has raised over $130,000 for the shelter’s medical fund), and served as a therapy team evaluator for two decades. She’s even hosted behavioral workshops for vet staff and volunteered with local high school career programs to inspire the next generation of animal care professionals.

Sarah also credits her success to organizations like 3core and Butte College Small Business Development Center, who offered not just funding, but invaluable training and coaching. “They believed in me,” she says, “and their support was critical to the growth of the business.” Local banks like Golden Valley Bank and Northern California National Bank were instrumental as well.

Her advice for aspiring entrepreneurs in Chico?

“Work from your heart. Let your business reflect your passions. Treat your customers with appreciation—they are a gift. Mentor your employees so they can grow. Be ready for the ups and downs, and always stay centered on your mission. And yes—use the incredible resources Chico has to offer like 3Core and SBDC that are here to support small business!"

Through her work, Sarah has redefined what it means to be a business owner in Chico—leading with compassion, integrity, and a deep love for dogs and people alike.

Thank you, Sarah, for choosing Chico—and for making it a better place, one wagging tail at a time.

In Chico, growth doesn’t happen in isolation — it happens in connection.

This week, we’re celebrating a milestone not just for one business, but for our entire community. All The Bitter just opened the doors to their brand-new zero-proof bar and lounge — the first of its kind in our area. It’s a space that invites everyone in, whether you’re curious about craft non-alcoholic options, or just looking for a cozy place to unwind with friends.

But this new space is more than a new lounge. It’s a reflection of what makes Chico so special.

Owners Ian and Carly poured heart, soul, and intentionality into every inch — and they didn’t do it alone. They collaborated with Alex Marshall Studios, a local maker known for stunning ceramics and home décor, to add pieces that helped bring the space to life. Including two custom hanging lights that anchor the lounge with warmth and artistry.

This kind of partnership is what sets our small town apart. It’s not just about opening a business — it’s about building something with your community. It’s about turning to local artists, makers, and fellow entrepreneurs to co-create spaces that feel personal, rooted, and connected.

When one of us grows, we all grow. Watching All The Bitter expand while bringing others along for the ride is a perfect reminder of the strength and creativity we have right here in Chico.

So if you’re looking for a new favorite spot to gather, relax, or sip something a little different — check out All The Bitter. You’ll feel the love, collaboration, and Chico charm the moment you walk in.

Meet Ashiah Bird — communicator, creative, community-builder. 💛

Ashiah’s journey to Chico started with a simple truth: she’s always loved learning. Born in Oregon but raised in Red Bluff, Ashiah toured schools across the country with big dreams and high grades. But despite all her options, California State University, Chico — the school she once swore she wouldn’t attend — ended up stealing her heart.

“I toured all these schools thinking I was going to go far, and of course, I fell in love with Chico State. It’s hard not to.”

Ashiah earned her degree in journalism and began building a life rooted in curiosity and service. Her early career included an internship at the Sacramento Bee, but she eventually returned to the North State, where she spent years reporting on city government, homelessness, and post-Camp Fire recovery for the Chico News & Review.

It was through her work as a journalist that she first encountered the people and programs of True North Housing Alliance, the nonprofit she now proudly serves full-time.

“I covered stories about True North when I was a journalist. I remember reporting from the Aurora North Home for Families when it first opened. So, stepping into this role felt like a natural evolution. Now I get to advocate directly for work I believe in.”

Ashiah joined True North during the upheaval of the pandemic, when local journalism was struggling, but community need was skyrocketing. Today, she helps tells stories that help move people forward and out of homelessness — with dignity, compassion, and accountability — while also continuing her creative passions!

A performer since age nine, Ashiah has sung the national anthem at Little League games, taught theater to youth in Paradise and Chico, performed on nearly every stage in Butte County (Blue Room Theatre, California Regional Theater, Chico Theater Company, Legacy Stage, Theatre On The Ridge, and more), and even led improv classes at Wildflower.

“Every theater experience builds on the last. Chico’s theater community is special. You meet people, you create together, you grow.”

Ask Ashiah why she chose to stay in Chico and her answer is clear: community. Chico’s mix of creativity, compassion, and closeness keeps her rooted.

“I’ll run into someone I interviewed years ago, and we’ll remember each other. Chico is the kind of place where those little connections happen all the time. It still feels like a small town — and I love that.”

Ashiah Bird reminds us that choosing Chico doesn’t mean choosing a single path. It means choosing people, purpose, and the possibility of making a difference — whether on stage, in print, or through the work of a life-changing nonprofit.

Make sure to check out therext performance: "Radioland’s Return to Paradise" at Theater on the Ridge, show runs July 24-Aug 10 every Thursday-Sunday

Katie Miller and her husband Thomas are the proud owners of Katie's Grooming, a pet grooming business serving Chico since 2021. Katie’s love for animals started early—right after high school, she began working at the local animal shelter, where she was inspired by the compassion of others who were dedicated to the well-being of local pets. From there, her journey continued through various pet-related jobs, including at a local pet supply store where she discovered her true calling: dog grooming.

Driven by the desire to offer a calm, personalized grooming experience for both pets and their owners, Katie opened her own business—and it’s been a dream come true ever since.

What makes Chico so special to Katie? It’s the community’s deep love for animals. From dog-friendly restaurants and parks to pet-focused events, Chico truly welcomes four-legged family members. A lifelong local, Katie is raising her three kids (and three dogs!) to enjoy the same outdoor beauty and tight-knit community she grew up with.

Businesses like Katie’s Grooming are a perfect example of what makes Chico shine—local roots, a love for animals, and a commitment to making our town a better place for pets and people alike.

Sonia is the owner of Sonia Aery: Allstate Insurance agency in Chico, but her story is anything but ordinary. A Yuba City native born in Chico, Sonia’s path has taken her through Davis, San Luis Obispo, and Sacramento before she found her way back to Chico—and decided to stay.

“I originally planned to be here temporarily, but I fell in love,” she says. “Now I’ve really made Chico my home.”

Before starting her business, Sonia led regional nonprofit efforts in housing advocacy and workforce development. Although she loved the mission-driven work, something was missing. Inspired by her parents—both Allstate agents themselves—and the impact she saw them have on families in her community, Sonia made a bold leap into insurance.

Starting from scratch in a new field and city wasn’t easy. “I didn’t really know anyone,” she recalls. “I had to be vulnerable, open—not just to networking, but to making genuine friendships.” But that openness paid off. She found strength in the Chico community—and built a network of colleagues, collaborators, and lifelong friends.

Since opening her agency in 2015, Sonia has helped secure over $85,000 in grant funding for Catalyst Domestic & Sexual Violence Services through The Allstate Foundation—where she also met her wife, Sarah. Today, the couple celebrates nearly seven years together and calls Chico home in every sense of the word.

“Chico is a town that rewards showing up—again and again, in different ways,” Sonia says. From small business crawls to Upper Park sunsets, she’s built a life and career rooted in connection, community, and impact.

When asked why she Chooses Chico, Sonia puts it simply:
“We have a hard time imagining leaving. It’s the people, the nature, the support—it’s home.”

Thinking about making Chico your home too? Let Sonia’s story inspire you to Choose Chico. Tag us in your story!
