According to a November 2022 journal published by the American Educational Research Association, teachers experienced nearly twice as many anxiety symptoms as healthcare workers during the pandemic. For Butte County educators, the burden of a worldwide pandemic was layered on top of challenges they already faced as the region recovered from the 2018 Camp Fire.

Chico State - School of Education and Associate Professor Tal Slemrod saw an opportunity to offer educators in the region more support as they adjusted to new teaching methods post-pandemic.

How do you learn leadership skills as a researcher, and how well is science served by its current crop of leaders? Learning how to say no effectively and allocating time to meet looming deadlines is a key skill for research leaders.

In this podcast episode, Spanish neuroscience and mental health researcher Gemma Modinos talks about her own leadership journey as a group leader at King’s College London and former chair of the Young Academy Europe.

Learning how to deliver a polite refusal, alongside management training, will help young scholars with leadership ambitions, says Gemma Modinos.

"Research increasingly shows that victims of climate change disasters are left with deep psychological wounds — from anxiety after hurricanes to surges in su***de during heat waves — that the nation’s disaster response agencies are ill-prepared to treat.

But in the burned and battered forests near Paradise, a small program run by California State University, Chico is using nature therapy walks to help fire survivors recover."

A California forest therapy program is testing whether landscapes ravaged by rising temperatures can help ease the anguish that climate change will bring.

Having served in the US Marine Corps for more than 4 years, Ty Weber witnessed many of his fellow leathernecks suffer from PTSD, anxiety, and depression both during active duty and when they returned to civilian life.
Now pursuing a Master of Science degree in the Marriage and Family Therapy program (Chico State Psychology Department), Weber is researching whether psychedelic drugs such as psilocybin, L*D, M**A, ketamine, and pe**te can create lasting positive effects when it comes to treating mental health. And he is asking for the campus community’s help in gathering data.

CSU, Chico Anthropology Department Professor Brian Brazeal's trip to Sri Lanka was originally planned after he received the University’s Lantis Award in 2019. He soon gathered his crew (including 2020 anthropology alumna Rose Merry Blanco and current student Stacey Jones) and planned the research trip for October 2020—but the COVID-19 pandemic halted the project. The project stalled until the Sri Lankan government slowly lifted a near-two-year lockdown.

“My departure was additionally delayed because a political crisis was brewing in Sri Lanka,” he said. “When Fulbright finally decided to let me go, they said, ‘you have to go right now.’”
