📣 Big news: Local 399 filed 10 Unfair Labor Practice charges against Prime Healthcare and MedSpace Services for bad-faith bargaining with our skilled maintenance members at 8 former Ascension hospitals. The people who kept those hospitals running deserve a real contract — not Prime's lowball offers that strip decades of seniority and vacation time.

A union of operating engineers is alleging that Prime Healthcare is bargaining in bad faith at eight of its Illinois hospitals — the latest union trouble to face the healthcare system.

Spring session is a wrap — and we made some noise. A huge thank you to State Representative Rick Ryan, Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch, and all 27 co-sponsors of HB5780, the Labor Compliance Disclosure for Health Care Facilities Act. If a hospital wants state approval or taxpayer-backed financing to expand, we think they should have to disclose their labor violations. We'll be back when the legislature reconvenes to finish the job.

In North Carolina, Advocate Health Care just tried to quietly absorb WakeMed — announcing the deal on a Friday afternoon and pushing for a vote by Monday. Public outcry forced a pause.

Leaders from the State Employees Association of North Carolina and the North Carolina State Health Plan just said the quiet part out loud: this is what monopoly-building looks like. Advocate has a history of using market dominance to block cost-control measures that benefit patients — and every new merger makes it worse.

Healthy competition benefits consumers through lower prices and improved quality. With NC's hospital markets already highly concentrated, officials should regard further mergers with suspicion, especially those hurried through under the cloak of darkness.
