Evanston Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7186 is pleased to announce the outcome of the 2023 VFW Patriot’s Pen competition.

The Patriot’s Pen essay contest encourages middle school students to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300-to-400-word essay. This year’s theme was “How are you inspired by America?”. Essays are graded on knowledge of the theme, theme development, and clarity.

Evanston VFW Post 7186 received forty entries. Three Roycemore students took away the top honors.
• Sojourner Fitz-Green – 7th Grade - first
• Alexandra Ryskin – 8th Grade – second
• Lyra Rivera 3rd – 8th Grade – third

All three live in Evanston.

Calling all Evanston High School Students!

The Evanston VFW Post 7186 annual Voice of Democracy essay contest is on.

Submit a 3-5 minute audio essay by mid-night Monday October 31 to enter the local competition for the $250 Post 7186 first place prize ... and the chance to compete for additional $$ prizes at the district, state, and national levels.

The VFW National 1st Place prize is a $35,000 scholarship.
