Welcome to the Foster Progress team, Sarah!

We’re excited to welcome Sarah as our new Y-CAP Program Coordinator!

Sarah works closely with our Y-CAP Program Manager, Dulce, to support college students with foster care experience, coordinate student communications and activities, support our Peer Advocates, and help keep the program running smoothly.

With a background in social work, youth health education, food access, and community engagement, Sarah brings six years of experience serving Chicago communities. As a q***r woman, she’s especially passionate about creating programs and communities where people feel welcomed, supported, and affirmed.

Outside of Foster Progress, Sarah enjoys trying new flavors at Lickity Split, cheering on the Minnesota Lynx, and spending time along Lake Michigan. 🏀🍦🌊

🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ+ History Month Spotlight: Dr. A. Damien Martin

This LGBTQ+ History Month, Foster Progress is highlighting an LGBTQ+ leader whose experience in foster care shaped his understanding of the needs of vulnerable youth.

Dr. A. Damien Martin was a gay activist, educator, psychiatrist, and advocate for LGBTQ+ youth. At age 8, Martin entered foster care and remained in foster care until he was 18.

He became a professor at NYU and a prominent gay rights advocate. In 1979, he and his partner, Dr. Emery Hetrick, co-founded the Institute for the Protection of Le***an and Gay Youth, which later became the Hetrick-Martin Institute.

The work that Dr. Martin and Dr. Hetrick began helped create spaces where LGBTQ+ youth could find support, safety, and community.

At Foster Progress, we know how meaningful it can be for young people to have people in their corner who understand their experiences. This LGBTQ+ History Month, we’re proud to recognize Dr. Martin and the impact of his work supporting LGBTQ+ youth.

🎓 FAFSA season is here tomorrow!

The 2027–28 FAFSA opens TOMORROW, October 1. If you’re planning to attend college in Fall 2027, now is the time to get ready.

You’ll need to complete the FAFSA every year you’re in college. It helps determine eligibility for federal and state financial aid, including Pell Grants and Illinois MAP Grants. For students with foster care experience, a FAFSA on file is also required to access DCFS education funding.

✨ Before you fill it out:
1️⃣ Create your StudentAid.gov account (FSA ID)
2️⃣ Set up multi-factor authentication
3️⃣ Gather your Social Security number and tax information

If you have foster care experience, make sure you understand whether you’ll file as an independent or dependent student. Your foster care history can affect the information you need to provide.

A big congratulations to Jeremiah as he gets ready to start his next chapter at Illinois State University! 🎓🔨

Jeremiah has started studying Construction Management this fall, and thanks to our Wishlist Campaign, he’ll be heading to college with some extra essentials from his Foster Progress community. Our 22 graduating students created wishlists with items they needed and wanted, and thanks to the generosity of our community, every wishlist was fulfilled!

These gifts are a meaningful way to support our students as they take this exciting next step. We’re so grateful to everyone who helped Jeremiah get ready for college and showed him that his community is behind him.

We’re proud of you, Jeremiah, and can’t wait to see all that you build at Illinois State University ❤️🎓
