The Shoes.

I first encountered the of Jesse Jackson through Operation Breadbasket in Indianapolis, Indiana as a poor little Black girl.

I had only recently discovered that I was poor - and that I was Black. The world has a way of teaching you without permission.

I remember being able to choose three pairs of shoes.

Three.

That felt like wealth.

Around that same time, I stood in a crowd and listened to Robert F. Kennedy speak the night Martin Luther King was assassinated.

I did not fully understand history then.
I just understood something heavy was happening .

We moved to Chicago in 1969.

Later I heard Jesse Jackson speak at my school.

“I am somebody.
I may be Black, but I am somebody. I may be poor, but I am somebody.”

And we believed him.

I didn’t yet have language for dignity.
Or oppression.
Or economic justice.

But I knew how it felt to be seen.

You are somebody.
You have always been somebody 🖤.
