Thirteen years have passed, yet the story of Alex Anthony Mandarino continues to inspire people who never had the privilege of meeting him.

Though we never knew Alex personally, we know courage when we see it. A little boy who faced more in his five short years than many of us will face in a lifetime, he battled neuroblastoma for over two years with extraordinary bravery, never losing the light that made him so special. His strength, his smile, and the love that surrounded him continue to speak across the years.

Today we remember not only the child who was taken far too soon, but the legacy he left behind. Alex reminds us that courage isn’t measured by age or size—it is measured by the heart. His life encourages us to cherish every moment, to love deeply, and to keep hope alive even in life’s hardest battles.

To his parents, Tony and Katie, please know that your son has touched lives far beyond those who knew him personally. His story continues to inspire others to face adversity with grace and strength.

May Alex’s beautiful memory forever shine as a light of hope, love, and courage. He will never be forgotten.

Beckley Foundation is proud to introduce a future Board Member and collaborator, Andrew Beckley!

Andrew graduated as the Valedictorian of the Bradford Christian Academy Class of 2026 in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He was honored to receive the Head of school award for academic excellence and community service as well as earning his AP Capstone degree. He also received awards for excellence in Science, Math, Bible, History, and English, and served as Student Council President. Andrew starred in multiple theater productions and wrote and directed an original play for the State wide METG theater competition and, currently holds 5 school records between Cross Country and Track.

This fall, Andrew will attend the University of Massachusetts Amherst Honors College as a recipient of the Dean’s Scholarship, where he will pursue a double major in Biochemistry and Computer Science (with a concentration in Artificial Intelligence).

Andrew’s passion lies with the immune system. He is especially fascinated by the ways cells communicate and coordinate with one another to recognize threats, direct the body’s immune response, and protect us from disease. At UMass Amherst, he hopes to join a research team where he can contribute to advancing treatments for autoimmune diseases and childhood cancers.

Andrew hopes to use his passion for scientific research and his skills in biology and artificial intelligence to advance the Beckley Foundation’s mission to eradicate childhood cancer, and hopes to one day serve on its Board of Directors.
