A Message from Purpose Revealed NFP

For years, I have poured into communities across Chicago and beyond... developing programs, creating opportunities, mentoring youth, coordinating summer camps, and ensuring that children had access to experiences that would expand their vision of what was possible. Many weekends were not spent resting, but serving. Not because I had to, but because I believed our young people deserved it.

I personally worked tirelessly to ensure youth had transportation to dance classes, performances, competitions, and opportunities throughout the city and out of town. I understood that talent means little if access is unavailable. So when barriers existed, I worked to remove them. When opportunities arose, I made sure our youth could get there.

This honor represents every program created, every child encouraged, every family supported, every performance rehearsed, every summer camp organized, every grant written, every challenge overcome, and every moment spent investing in the lives of others.

Through Purpose Revealed NFP, we have remained committed to helping young people discover their gifts, strengthen their mental wellness, embrace the arts, and walk boldly in their purpose. This recognition affirms that service matters. Community matters. People matter.

I accept this award with gratitude, humility, and a heart that remains committed to the work. The honor is appreciated, but the impact is what matters most.

Thank you to every volunteer, partner, supporter, parent, board member, and young person who has been part of this journey. You have all helped shape this legacy of service.

The work continues. The mission continues. The purpose continues to be revealed.

With gratitude,

Dr. Rocherr Landrum (Hon)

I recently watched a video of Spencer Leak Jr. sitting in a drive-thru line, paying it forward for the car behind him. As simple as that act may seem, it immediately reminded me of my stage play, Taking Our Neighborhoods Back.
The play was inspired by the lives of children growing up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s...a time when kids could ride their bikes, play double dutch, jump rope, and stay outside until the streetlights came on. While no generation was perfect, there was a stronger sense of community. Neighbors looked out for one another. Adults corrected children who weren't their own. People knew the families on their block. There was a shared responsibility for the well-being of the neighborhood.
When I think about Spencer Leak Jr.'s act of paying it forward, I can't help but think about the legacy of his father and the message it sends. Paying it forward is bigger than buying someone a cup of coffee or a meal. It's about creating a culture where we care about the person behind us, beside us, and across the street from us which is what he wanted to convey.
What if we paid it forward by checking on our elderly neighbors? What if we paid it forward by mentoring a young person? What if we paid it forward by learning the names of the children on our block and helping guide them when they lose their way? What if we paid it forward by refusing to turn a blind eye to the struggles happening in our communities?
We often ask how we stop the senseless violence and killings in Chicago. The answer isn't simple, but I believe it begins with rebuilding community. Violence thrives where people feel disconnected, unseen, and unsupported. Healing begins when people know someone cares.
Maybe "paying it forward" isn't just a kind gesture. Maybe it's a blueprint for taking our neighborhoods back.
One act of kindness. One conversation. One neighbor. One block at a time. I'm truly inspired to pull this manuscript back out.

May 22nd reminded me just how important it is to be intentional with my time, my space, and my mental wellness. I unplugged with purpose, and honestly, I carried that same energy with me for days after.
This weekend was mindful, peaceful, and necessary. Along with a lil self-care, I spent time with my niece and nephew, cleaned up my yard getting it ready for the summer, went flower shopping, spent quality time with friends, and simply allowed myself to be present in the moments instead of consumed by the noise.
One thing about me... I feel energy deeply!!! Even when things are left unsaid or presented subliminally, I pick up on it so because of that, I have to be intentional about protecting my mental space, my time, my health, and my wealth. Everybody cannot have access to your energy all day, every day. Sometimes disconnecting is not avoidance... it is maintenance, wellness and preservation.
This experience reminded me that peace is not something you stumble upon. Peace is something you choose on purpose and I will absolutely be taking more intentional breaks moving forward.
Unplugging helped me reconnect with myself, with people I love, and with the life happening right in front of me.

How are we witnessing children stampeding across the city of Chicago in great numbers, and parents truly not knowing where their children are or what they are doing? The same behaviors we are seeing in the streets are walking right into our schools every single day. Teachers are burnt out, overwhelmed, and expected to carry the weight of raising, correcting, counseling, teaching, and managing children with little accountability at home.
At some point, we have to stop blaming educators for everything happening inside the school buildings while ignoring what is happening outside of them. Schools are a reflection of the communities they serve. If children are moving through the city with no structure, no guidance, no consequences, and no supervision, that behavior will absolutely show up in classrooms.
This is not about attacking parents. This is about accountability, partnership, and truth. Teachers cannot do this work alone. Communities cannot heal if everybody keeps passing responsibility to someone else. Our children need boundaries, involvement, support, discipline, love, and adults who are paying attention. This is bigger than a “bad day” at school. This is a community crisis, and pretending otherwise is not helping our children.

Shout out for the way people are coming together to save prom for the young ladies!

05/14/2026

There is a situation circulating on social media involving a young lady and her small business struggles while trying to fulfill orders for prom. While I absolutely understand people wanting accountability and wanting to support the young ladies involved, I also believe we have to be mindful of the humanity and mental health of everyone involved. As a mental health specialist, I have to say that social media can become very cruel very quickly. There is a difference between addressing a situation and publicly tearing someone down while they are clearly experiencing distress. Have you ever been torn down on social media? I have.
Mental health matters even when someone makes mistakes, falls short, or is overwhelmed. Compassion should not only be reserved for certain people. If people truly want to help, then help the young ladies, support solutions, encourage accountability, and move with grace but mocking, piling on, and disregarding another person’s emotional well-being is not healing, it’s harmful. We have to learn how to hold people accountable without destroying them in the process.

This year, while planning International Day of No Social Media, I found myself needing a major reset. With so much violence surrounding our communities, the very reason I founded this day came full circle. I watched people I love bury people they love because of violence, and it reminded me why this work matters.
International Day of No Social Media was created to bring awareness to mental health as it relates to violence in our communities and the effect social media has on our lives.
On May 22, 2026, go off the grid for mental health.
Do it for peace. Do it for presence. Do it for mental health.

JUST TALK TO YOUR CHILDERN...
Since I was a child, the go-to questions have always been:
“How was your day?”
“What did you learn?”
Parents… can we go a little deeper?
When you don’t show real concern or give intentional attention to your child’s day, they can start to feel like nobody is really checking and when kids feel unchecked, some will test limits… and some will take it even further.
That can show up as:
✔ Hiding behaviors
✔ Downplaying incidents
✔ Participating in things they know they shouldn’t
✔ Or even contributing to the kind of group behaviors we’re seeing more of like disruptions and “takeovers”
And let’s be honest… it’s not always about being “bad.”
Sometimes it’s:
– wanting attention
– peer pressure
– feeling unseen or unheard
– or knowing no one is asking the right questions
If you really want to know how your child’s day went, ask specific questions.
Be present.
Be intentional.
Be involved...casually and consistently.
Because “fine” doesn’t tell you much…
but the right questions will reveal more.
