๐˜ฟ๐™š๐™–๐™™๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ข๐™š was first composed by Cally Spooner in 2018 as a 63-page performance score. At the Graham Foundation, sixteen artworksโ€”including sound, film, sculpture, painting, and installationโ€”that make up ๐˜ฟ๐™š๐™–๐™™๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ข๐™š overlap and collide, synchronized to a duration of 43 minutes and 59 seconds over the three floors of the historic building. Each floor draws out the tension field between the destructiveness of performance, and the possibility of resistance and repair.

Join us in-person at the Graham Foundation, 5:30โ€“6:30 pm CT or join via live streamโ€”register with the link in our bio. Architectural historian Charles L. Davis II will moderate a discussion following the talk.

Nolanโ€™s talk explores how African American-owned insurance companies negotiated the (often vexed) aims of pursuing financial gain while also trying to create more equitable cities. In efforts to reverse the effects of redlining, disinvestment, and segregation, these companies used housing developments and corporate architectureโ€”including the first and only African American skyscraperโ€”to redress discriminatory forms of urbanism and racial stereotypes. The talk will evaluate the urban and architectural interventions of African American insurance companies, using the companies' office buildings, housing developments, and mortgage-lending practices to engage debates around Black capitalism and Black Marxism.
