Meet our team before the strategy decks, the donor calls, and the global community-building, although it looks like some things never change. 😄

Both at GlobalRomania and at RUF - Romanian United Foundation, everything we do is ultimately for the next generation — the children of our diaspora communities, the kids in Romania who deserve better opportunities, and the dreamers who will carry this work forward.

Born from an idea by our Chief Growth Officer Diana Gini , and backed by a grant from Romanian United Foundation, this new podcast series by Rozoom Press is a space where the Romanian diaspora in the US and Canada gets to tell its own story — live, unfiltered, and in conversation with you.

Part of the RUF - Romanian United Foundation team came together in person in Bucharest this week to properly welcome Luciana Ionescu into the team, and what came out of that room was something truly special.
As Aldina Gheorghe put it:
"We each come from different corners of the world, and we each bring something different. But that's exactly what makes us powerful. No matter the distance, we are stronger together."
A shared meal, genuine laughter, and a collective vision for what GlobalRomania and RUF can become — this is what community looks like in action.

Romanian cinema is having a moment.

Cristian Mungiu's new film "Fjord" is in the official competition at Cannes 2026 - nominated for the Palme d'Or. That's the same festival where Mungiu won for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days back in 2007.

This time he's got Sebastian Stan alongside him. The two together on one of cinema's biggest stages is not something that happens every day.

The film follows a Romanian-Norwegian family who move to the wife's remote Norwegian hometown. When suspicions of abuse arise, Norway's child protection system launches an investigation - and what starts as a domestic case turns into a national trial. Based on real events.

Stan plays Mihai Gheorghiu (yes, a Romanian character - and yes, he speaks a bit of Romanian in the film). Opposite him is Renate Reinsve, the Norwegian actress from The Worst Person in the World. Shot in Ålesund, Norway. It's Mungiu's first English-language film.

Neon picked up distribution for the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Wide release coming in 2026.

Cannes is in May. We'll be watching.

Today, April 8th, is International Roma Day — and it matters.
The day marks the first major international gathering of Romani delegates in 1971, a moment that declared Romani existence, culture, and rights on a world stage. Over 10 million Roma live across Europe today, and their stories — of resilience, music, family, and identity — deserve to be heard.

Yesterday, we lost one of Romania's greatest — Mircea Lucescu passed away on April 7th, at 80 years old.

There's no way to overstate what he meant to us. For generations of Romanians, he wasn't just a coach. He was proof that we could compete at the highest level, that Romanian talent, discipline, and heart belonged on the world stage. He believed that before anyone else did.

He captained Romania at the 1970 World Cup. He was the first to qualify our national team for a European Championship — 1984, a moment that made a country erupt. He went on to conquer Turkish football, win the UEFA Cup with Shakhtar Donetsk, and coach across Europe for decades — never stopping, never settling, always pushing.

At 79, he came back to coach Romania one more time. He didn't have to. He chose to.

This photo has been shared thousands of times today, and for good reason. It shows Mircea embracing his son Răzvan after a match where they coached against each other — rivals on the pitch, father and son everywhere else. It captures the man perfectly: fiercely competitive, and fiercely loving.

He stepped down just days before he passed. His last act was still Romania.

The Romanian community around the world is mourning today. We are too.

Rest in peace, Mister. What you built will never be forgotten. 🖤⚽🇷🇴

🎂 Happy Anniversary, ACADEMIA DE STUDII ECONOMICE DIN BUCURESTI !
113 Years of Academic Excellence
On April 6, 1913, King Carol I signed the Decree establishing the Academy of Higher Commercial and Industrial Studies. Today, the Bucharest University of Economic Studies (ASE) celebrates 113 years of shaping generations of economists, entrepreneurs, and leaders — many of whom have gone on to build remarkable careers around the world.
Over 17,000 ASE graduates are active internationally today. Many of them wish to stay connected with their Alma Mater, with Romania, and with a community where shared experience and values can create real impact.
That is precisely why the Bucharest University of Economic Studies has launched the Alumni ASE Bucuresti International Club — an initiative dedicated to graduates living and working abroad.
GlobalRomania is a proud institutional partner in this project, and we are truly delighted to support the mapping and connecting of the international ASE alumni community. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to keeping Romania's brightest minds engaged, connected, and impactful — wherever in the world they may be.
