The Adler Planetarium is the first planetarium in the Western Hemisphere! Located on Chicago’s lakeshore, the museum typically hosts more than half a million visitors each year and reaches millions more through youth STEAM programs, neighborhood skywatching events, people-powered research, and other outreach efforts. Today, the Adler is bringing our unique approach—scientific exploration rooted in

community and connection—to guests from around the world who can enjoy the digital Adler from their own homes, libraries, schools or offices.

How do you map a galaxy when you're inside it? 🤯

This is what astronomers figured out how to do in 1951 by observing the movement and size of stars near Earth, proving for the first time the spiral structure of the Milky Way.

Adler curator, Dr. Katie Boyce-Jacino, gives you a closer look at the very first map of our galaxy ✨

Black holes are kind of like space fossils. Just like paleontologists study fossilized dinosaur bones to learn what life was like for dinosaurs, astronomers study black holes to learn about the lives and deaths of ancient stars.

This got us thinking: Who is more formidable? A T-Rex or a black hole?

We asked astrophysicists .galaudage and to weigh in on this important question 🤝

Summer weather has finally arrived, all thanks to our tilt toward the Sun 😎

Learn more about our place in the universe this weekend at The Adler Planetarium, and catch our two new dome shows:

✨ "Worlds Beyond Earth" you’ll soar through the rings of Saturn, dive into buried oceans, float over active volcanoes, and search for signs of life on distant worlds.

✨ "The Universe Explained, Live" an Adler presenter will guide you through recent space discoveries before taking you on a faster-than-light-speed journey, a billion light-years away and back.

What’s the difference between dark matter and dark energy? Dr. Lindsay House breaks it down! We’re also bringing back our funky earworm to help you remember 🎶

Dr. Lindsay is one of dozens of astronomers regularly available in our Space Visualization Lab to answer your questions about space. Come to the Adler Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays for Astronomy Conversations, where you can talk to our experts about everything under the Sun (and beyond)!

Today, the Adler Planetarium is 96 years old!

My name is Michelle Nichols, and I’m the Senior Director of Public Programs at the Adler Planetarium. My favorite thing to do is introduce people to the wonders of our Universe—and I’m lucky enough to call that my job.

I’ve always had an interest in space science. My parents and I were members of the Adler Planetarium for many years when I was a kid. Because of my science interests, I pursued higher education in physics, astronomy, and education. When I started here in 1995, freshly graduated, I knew this place would be special to me and my future. What I didn’t know was how much the people here—my dedicated colleagues, volunteers, and stargazers of all ages—would shape my experience and make the Adler so extraordinary.

In my over three decades, I have been lucky enough to contribute to the development of exhibits, planetarium shows, and unique programs and events for museum guests. I created ’Scopes in the City—a program that brings telescope observing opportunities to communities all across the Chicagoland area. I developed deep connections with our amazing telescope volunteers and helped to shape our volunteer program for over two decades! I’ve been there for each groundbreaking astronomical discovery, celestial event, and moment of shared wonder with our guests.

The Adler Planetarium has inspired Chicagoans to learn, discover, and explore their universe for almost a century, and I’m proud to have been part of it for more than 30 years and counting. With your support, we can invest in the people who make this institution so special in our centennial and beyond. Plus, thanks to NASCAR Chicago and an anonymous donor, each gift will be matched up to $20,000—meaning your support goes twice as far!

We’re almost 96! There’s been a lot of science and research within those years—something the Adler Planetarium is proud to be part of.

This past year, we’ve contributed to all kinds of research, like:
⭐Gravitational Wave Research, where we’ve co-authored 12 different research papers on gravitational waves and the compact objects they’re formed by.

⭐Near Earth Objects, by developing a groundbreaking mission concept made up of flybys of asteroids, teaching us more about Near Earth Objects.

⭐Exoplanets, where we’ve imaged exoplanet transits and published our data so researchers can use it for their studies.

⭐And so much more!

You can help us celebrate our 96th trip around the Sun by supporting the work that makes it all possible. Your gift fuels research, exhibits, sky shows, community programs—and right now, every gift is MATCHED up to $20,000, thanks to NASCAR Chicago and an anonymous donor!

Make your gift today to be part of our discoveries, experiences, and opportunities that inspire and connect people to the universe and each other!
