Did you know carbon monoxide poisoning can happen outdoors, too?

Deadly CO exposure can occur near grills, fire pits, generators, and even boats.

When grilling, keep the CO source far away from windows and doors so fumes don’t drift indoors.

If you’re spending time on a boat, make sure it’s equipped with proper CO detection. Dangerous CO buildup can also happen on the back deck when engine exhaust is pushed back by wind conditions. Avoid sitting too close to the engine area for extended periods of time.

A Maine family is crediting their cat, Mojo, with saving their lives from carbon monoxide poisoning after the pet began meowing and acting unusually late at night.

After the family began experiencing headaches and shortness of breath, they decided to call 911. Emergency crews later discovered dangerous CO levels in the home caused by a malfunctioning propane furnace. One family member required hyperbaric oxygen treatment following the exposure.

Stories like this are powerful reminders that carbon monoxide is invisible, odorless, and harmful. Working carbon monoxide alarms are critical for early detection and can make the difference between life and death.

🚤 Boating Safety Reminder: Don’t Forget About Carbon Monoxide

When people think about boating safety, they usually think life jackets, weather, and navigation. But there’s another risk that often gets overlooked on the water: carbon monoxide.

Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and deadly. It can build up quickly on boats, especially around engines, generators, and enclosed or partially enclosed spaces.

How exposure can happen on boats:
🛟 Running engines or generators while anchored
🛟 Sitting on swim platforms or near exhaust outlets
🛟 Enclosed cabins with poor ventilation
🛟 Drifting exhaust fumes on calm days with little wind

Simple ways to stay safer:
🛟 Install CO alarms in enclosed cabin areas
🛟 Never swim near the back of a boat while engines are running

In just one year, we’ve raised awareness about carbon monoxide safety, encouraged the use of portable alarms while traveling, and advocated for stronger protections in hotels, motels, and short-term rentals.

To everyone who has supported, shared, learned, or joined us in this mission—thank you. This work is only possible because of you.
