The chilly temps on December 13th didn’t stop FHS Chicago-Midwest Chapter! Led by Julien Trautmann from Le Nougat in Montélimar, France, we enjoyed a wide range of desserts made in house by the talented chefs at Elawa Farm. From a simple date to Pompe à l’Huile, a soft brioche of Provence that represents unity and generosity, we learned about and indulged in this special French Provençal tradition. Afterwards, guests braved the cold weather and took a tour of Elawa Farm. A real highlight was meeting the goats! Merci et bonnes fêtes à tous; we can’t wait to see you all again in the new year! .nougat.us

FHS Chicago-Midwest Chapter is pleased to announce that the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has committed to support the Ste. Geneviève-Modoc Ferry! Matching the current amount provided by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) to aid ferry operations, IDOT will be contributing $88,000 to this initiative. Thanks to all of your mobilization, supportive efforts and letters written, the Ste. Geneviève-Modoc Ferry will be able to return to a full operating schedule. The Ste. Geneviève-Modoc Ferry is a vital source of transportation across the Mississippi River for the southern Illinois and southeastern Missouri communities, two regions rich in French heritage. The ferry, sometimes referred to as “the French Connection,” promotes regional connectivity and economic activity for communities in Illinois and in Missouri, key partnerships within the French Heritage Corridor frenchheritagecorridor.org and it is especially important for providing access to cultural landmarks in these historic communities that draw heritage tourism. FHS is incredibly grateful this Thanksgiving season for all of your support towards this cause! Merci beaucoup! .genevievemodocferry -Cahokia Trail

We saw the LIGHT on November 6th when FHS-Chicago Midwest chapter hosted Christopher Kelly from Vézelay, France, who delighted us with his insights about the Basilica of Vézelay. Mr. Kelly demonstrated Medieval architecture’s lasting power using the Golden Mean and two key tools: the Builder’s Stick and a rope with 13 knots set in equidistant lengths. We marvelled at the precision with which the builders captured dramatic effects of sunlight inside the basilica at key times of the year. This was poetry in stone! Guests mingling in the cozy space enjoyed special wines from the Burgundy region and delicious food provided by Volo Restaurant Wine Bar. Mille mercis to our event sponsors, Volo, and Barge Lady Cruises who shared information regarding their beautiful excursions on offer in France’s Northern Burgundy region. The Basilica of Vézelay is a regular highlight of their tour. As we basque in the warm afterglow of this special fundraising event, FHS hopes to see you at the next one on December 13th…stay tuned!

Proud to partner with Volo and Barge Lady Cruises. Please join us for an unforgettable evening next Thursday!

Almost a year and a half ago, my girlfriend and I had just stepped off our first barge cruise in the South of France, drifting along the Canal du Midi, and already dreaming of one day returning to explore Burgundy the same way.

Nine months later, that dream became reality when our phone rang from Barge Lady Cruises with an opportunity to join just such a cruise on the Luciole—a “charming class” barge—with five other couples. What followed was a week of pure enchantment: medieval towns, the French countryside unfolding around us, endless vineyards, exquisite meals prepared by our onboard chef, and the warm hospitality of barge owner Penny Liley, her captain, and amazing crew.

Among countless highlights, one stood above the rest: our visit to the Basilica of Vézelay, guided by none other than Christopher Kelly.

Now, the FHS Chicago–Midwest Chapter invites you to relive that same sense of wonder. Join us at Volo’s cozy-chic all-season patio as we welcome Christopher Kelly, visiting from France, for a fascinating talk about FHS’s 2025 special grantee: the Basilica of Vézelay.

Enjoy a cocktail dînatoire and an open bar featuring curated Burgundy wines, local beer, and soft drinks as we journey together through the philosophical and architectural genius behind Vézelay’s ethereal grace — a marvel of design from the earliest chapters of our shared history.
