Black market hair transplant clinics continue to be a growing concern worldwide. According to the ISHRS 2025 Practice Census, 59% of ISHRS members reported there are black market hair transplant clinics in their cities - up from 51% in 2021.

The survey also found that the average percentage of repair cases due to previous black market hair transplants was 10%, highlighting the real impact unsafe and unregulated procedures can have on patients.

We remain committed to raising awareness about the importance of patient safety and physician-led hair transplant surgery.

Registration for our next ISHRS 2026 CME webinar is now open.

Topic: Scalp Tissue Quality and Laxity: Impact on Surgical Planning and Outcomes
Date: Saturday, June 6, 2026
Moderator: Timothy Carman, MD, FISHRS | USA
Co-Moderator: Chiara Insalaco, MD, PhD | Italy

This 2.5-hour live webinar, Scalp Tissue Quality and Laxity: Impact on Surgical Planning and Outcomes, is designed to summarize the core clinical practices that should serve as the standard of care in the assessment and management of the wide variety of scalp presentations encountered in donor harvesting.

The session will cover objective evaluation of scalp tissue, strategies for managing challenging presentations in both FUE and FUT harvest selection, and the realities of operating on tissue affected by inflammation, trauma, or low density.

By revisiting these critical topics, participants will gain a greater appreciation for the importance of staying current in fundamental tissue management techniques that help preserve the gold standard of quality outcomes, making hair transplant procedures both surgically and artistically successful.

Clinical Perspectives on Minoxidil for Hair Loss

Minoxidil is an FDA-approved topical treatment designed to stabilize androgenetic alopecia by extending the hair growth cycle and increasing follicle diameter. Consistent daily application is required to preserve hair density and maintain therapeutic results, as benefits typically diminish upon discontinuation.

Hair restoration trends are evolving - and so are patient needs.

📊 According to the ISHRS 2025 Practice Census, 40% of members reported an increase in transgender hair transplant procedures in 2024, reflecting a growing demand for gender-affirming care.

Additional global insights:

-The average ISHRS physician treated 668 patients in 2024 (surgical + non-surgical)
-Non-surgical treatments continue to rise, with strong growth since 2021
-Hair loss remains primarily driven by genetic factors (70.9%), but patient motivations are increasingly diverse

As the field advances, inclusivity, innovation, and physician-led care remain at the center of delivering safe, personalized outcomes.

There are only 3 FDA-cleared treatments for hair loss.
Most patients know two of them.

Low level laser therapy, also known as red light therapy or photobiomodulation, has been clinically used since the 1960s. No side effects. FDA-cleared for both safety and efficacy. And when combined with minoxidil or finasteride, the results are multiplicative, not just additive.

Dr. Bob Leonard has been using it in his practice for 35 years. His clinical observations: 90% stabilization of hair loss progression. 60% regrowth of miniaturized hairs.

Dr. Sara Wasserbauer puts it simply: "It's not smoke and mirrors. It's one of those things we have scientific evidence for really working."
