Coming out of the end of this weekend and Illinois’ legislative session, we have a major win for Environmental Justice communities in Illinois that deal with the disproportionate exposure to air pollution at the hands of industry.

SB 3722, aka the Environmental Justice Air Permitting bill, passed on May 30th. The bill sets forward a solid framework of taking into accont the existing build up of air pollution in environmental justice communities and the hands of polluting industries.

We are so glad to see IL taking another step forward in protecting EJ communities! A big thank you to the chief sponsors of the bill, Senator Celina Villanueva ( ) and Stare Rep. Lilian Jiménez ( .lilianjimenez ). Thank you for leading this charge during this legislative session! Now the work goes on as we continue fighting for EJ Community protections!

As more updates come out about the bill’s implementation, we’ll make sure to inform yall!

This past Saturday, May 30th, we flocked 🚌 down to Springifield along 600+ other IL residents and advocates to rally behind the POWER Act! ⚡️

We went down with the plan to tell legislators that it’s time we stop paying for the hidden costs of data centers! We held a rally in the bill’s honor, which would be the most comprehensive data centers legislation in the nation! We spoke with law makers, brought constituents to their offices, and echoed through the capitol buildings that we don’t want to pay for data centers any longer!

The day was incredibly successfull, and we thank for organizing it all! 💚We look forward to the next Lobby Day!

This past Monday, May 11, our Illinois team joined Rachel Ventura and community members from Joliet Residents for Responsible Growth for a press conference outside Joliet City Hall to raise concerns about the proposed Joliet Data Center.

The press conference called attention to the lack of community transparency in the approval process and urged state lawmakers to pass the POWER Act to strengthen accountability and community input in large-scale development decisions.

Our Program Director, Lucy Contreras, moderated the press conference, introduced speakers, and highlighted key provisions of the POWER Act, emphasizing why strong guardrails and community transparency measures must be implemented.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who spoke out and showed up in support. The link to the CBS story and news clip is in our bio!

What has the Illinois GreenLatinos team been up to?! Swipe through to see some of the events Lucy and Bela 💚 have found themselves at in these past two busy weeks!

🗓️ Wed. April 29th: The team joined partners in Pilsen to talk about how air pollution uniquely affects our communities, and specific legislation that’s intended to curb or mitigate this issue. we touched on the Hazel Johnson cumulative Impacts Ordinance at the city level in Chicago, and the ISR Warehouse Pollution bill and Diesel emissions testing bill at the state level. It was a great evening! S/o to State Rep. Theresa Mah ( ) for attending!

🗓️ Sat. May 2nd: Bela and Lucy attended Aurora’s GreenFest and tabled on some of their building decarb work while there! This was such a fun event and Aurora’s first time holding their GreenFest to the size they did. They hope to attend again next year! S/o Congressman Bill Foster ( ) for stopping by our table as well!

🗓️ Tue. & Wed. May 5th & 6th: Our program director Lucy Contreras attended Springfield’s Latinos Unity Day. For two days, Latinos leaders and advocates gathered in Springfield to discuss issues close to the state’s Latino communities. Lucy hosted their second annual EJ Panel during the event, focusing on Data Centers and the POWER Act. A huge thank you to the panelists! 💚

On behalf of GreenLatinos and Warehouse Workers for Justice, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us this past Monday for our Data Centers Town Hall in Joliet! 💚

It was incredibly meaningful to gather in community over a meal and share space for such an important conversation. We’re deeply grateful for the time, insight, and lived experience everyone brought into the room.

Together, we had an important and grounding discussion on:

- What data centers are and why they’re coming to Illinois
- The hidden costs of Data Centers on communities
- The Joliet Data Center Proposal and ways to get involved in local organizing efforts
- State and Local policy action that can be used to regulate data centers
- And ways folks can take action

We always enjoy our time in Joliet, and collaborating with Warehouse Workers For Justice!

Hoping that those who couldn’t join us for this event, can for the next! We look forward to working in the community again soon, thanks again! 💚
