At the beginning of this month, we gathered with our urban greening initiative grantees, as well as community partners and members to celebrate the urban greening work being done across the city as it comes to a close!
☘️🌿🍃

We enjoyed delicious food, great music, and inspiring words from our poet, featured speaker, and all our grantees throughout the night 🤍

Thank you so much to everybody who came out and celebrated with us! We are so proud of all of the work that has gone into each of these projects, and are excited to see their impacts in the Chicagoland communities for years to come! 🌟

Shout out to the National Museum of Mexican Art for being a great host, and we hope to celebrate and share good food and laughs with our partners and friends again soon!

Thank you to everyone who come out for our McKinley Park Data Center & POWER Act Town Hall on August 13! On behalf of GreenLatinos, Prairie Rivers Network, Citizens Utility Board, and Vote Solar, we are grateful for your participation, thoughtful questions, and valuable feedback.

After enjoying some Empanadas from Cafe Tola, we dove into what data centers are, how they are impacting our communities, and how the POWER act establishes critical guardrails to regulate data centers.

We will continue hosting educational sessions on data centers and the POWER act until data centers in our state are regulated and no longer left unchecked!

🪻 Communities in Bloom 🪻

Join us for a celebration honoring seven Latino- and Black-led organizations that have transformed communities across the Chicago region through urban greening projects!

Over the past two years, these community leaders have revitalized parks, expanded urban farms, created thriving community gardens, and increased access to green space in Chicagoland neighborhoods, from Englewood to Pilsen and beyond.

Together, we’ll celebrate their accomplishments, hear stories of impact, and recognize the power of community-led environmental stewardship.
Come celebrate the people and projects helping Chicago communities bloom! 🌱

¡Acompáñanos en una celebración en honor a siete organizaciones dirigidas por personas latinas y afroamericanos que han transformado comunidades de toda la región de Chicago a través de proyectos de ecologización urbana!

Durante los últimos dos años, estos líderes comunitarios han revitalizado parques, ampliado granjas urbanas, creado prósperos huertos comunitarios y mejorado el acceso a los espacios verdes en barrios de toda la región de Chicago, desde Englewood hasta Pilsen y más allá.

As June came to a halt, we rounded out the month with our second volunteer day of the summer☀️

We collaborated with located in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood to help them de-weed their long garden bed. The bed sits alongside a gorgeous and almost complete mural done by local artists! We were given about 6 different plants to look for, including a variety of mint, winding vine plants, and oak tree saplings! We were focusing on giving the intentionally placed plants more room to grow and breath in the garden. 🌱

Afterwards, we invited attendees to eat tamales 🫔 with us from the garden’s market vendor, and got to know each other a bit more! We hope folks who didn’t get the chance to join today, are able to join us for our next volunteer day in August!

Last week, June 24th - 26th, our team joined fellow EJ Organizations across the US in Chicago for the Environmental Justice Leadership Forum hosted by WeAct ( ) and People for Community Recovery, also know as PCR! ( ) 💚

Our three days were amazingly split up across hearing from different organizations across the US and Midwest on their unique fights, diving deep into fighting data centers & strategizing, and going down to Chicago’s Southeast for a Toxic Tour 🚎 of the Altgeld Gardens community area.

We met up with a friendly face from our federal public lands team, as well as one of our GL Volunteers in their professional role with a fellow EJ Org! What a great week to be in community and solidarity with everyone 💚 A huge shoutout to both organizing groups for putting this all together!

Our current top horror movies at the moment. . .

We will not be backing down on demanding regulations for data centers, and pushing for the POWER Act’s 📄passage throughout the rest of 2026!

We firmly stand by the POWER Act and its intent to rile in data centers across Illinois. Illinoisans💚 deserve transparency, affordable energy, and clean air & water. We should not have to pay for the hidden costs of power hungry Data Centers.

Amigues, the time is finally here! The Northern Illinois Transit Authority Act (NITA) goes into effect THIS month. With a June 1st starting date, here’s a quick recap on what NITA will mean for our transit system 🚌 🚉 and its riders. From streamlined services, improved safety precautions, and a new governing board, NITA is set up to overhaul our transit system so it serves the Illinois more directly and beneficially 💚

We’ll make sure to bring more updates your way as changes begin rolling out!

Coming out of the end of this weekend and Illinois’ legislative session, we have a major win for Environmental Justice communities in Illinois that deal with the disproportionate exposure to air pollution at the hands of industry.

SB 3722, aka the Environmental Justice Air Permitting bill, passed on May 30th. The bill sets forward a solid framework of taking into accont the existing build up of air pollution in environmental justice communities and the hands of polluting industries.

We are so glad to see IL taking another step forward in protecting EJ communities! A big thank you to the chief sponsors of the bill, Senator Celina Villanueva ( ) and Stare Rep. Lilian Jiménez ( .lilianjimenez ). Thank you for leading this charge during this legislative session! Now the work goes on as we continue fighting for EJ Community protections!

As more updates come out about the bill’s implementation, we’ll make sure to inform yall!

Al salir de este fin de semana y del cierre de la sesión legislativa de Illinois, tenemos una gran victoria para las comunidades de Justicia Ambiental en Illinois que enfrentan una exposición desproporcionada a la contaminación del aire causada por la industria.

El SB 3722, también conocido como el proyecto de ley de Permisos de Aire para la Justicia Ambiental, fue aprobado el 30 de mayo. Esta ley establece un marco sólido que toma en cuenta la acumulación existente de contaminación del aire en las comunidades de justicia ambiental y el impacto de las industrias contaminantes.
