Rounding out our performer highlights for the Kaizen Gala, we are featuring Van Paugam! is our resident DJ, a City Pop pioneer, and longtime supporter of the Japanese Arts Foundation.

Van is one of the earliest DJs outside of Japan to specialize in City Pop, the 70s-80s Japanese genre experiencing a global resurgence. Since 2016, he has been a catalyst for that revival, introducing audiences around the world to the nostalgia, aesthetics, and history behind the music. His mixes have captured the imagination of hundreds of thousands, giving listeners a sense of longing and connection to a world they may not have known, while treating Japanese culture with deep respect and care.

Van’s work embodies the spirit of Kaizen, gradually improving his craft while elevating Chicago’s City Pop and contemporary Japanese arts scene year after year. A student of Japanese language with an encyclopedic knowledge of late-20th-century Japanese music and culture, Van goes beyond simply “playing records.” His work weaves Japanese urban life, Western perspectives, and pop culture aesthetics into immersive experiences. He has activated historic and contemporary Japanese spaces in our city, from City Pop era throwbacks like Murasaki Sake Lounge to collaborations with beloved institutions like . He has also brought City Pop to cities globally like Paris and Berlin. He has performed for universities, listening lounges, matsuri, and even the Consul-General of Japan.

Van is not only a part of the JAF team, he is a friend of the foundation, and an unsung hero of City Pop’s resurgence. At the Kaizen Gala, guests will experience one of his signature vinyl sets: thoughtful, nostalgic, and designed to celebrate Japanese culture in innovative and meaningful ways.

Continuing with our performer highlights for the Kaizen Gala, today we are featuring Chanoyu (Tea Ceremony) expert, Omar Francis Sensei!

Omar Francis, an instructor in the Urasenke Tradition of Chadō (Japanese Way of Tea), first discovered the Way of Tea while studying art at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (). After beginning his training in Chicago, he went on to study full-time in Kyoto in the prestigious Midorikai program of the Urasenke tradition. For over 30 years, Francis has shared chanoyu throughout the Midwest, from Loyola University and Notre Dame to the Chicago Botanic Garden, Anderson Japanese Gardens, Chicago’s Osaka Garden, Japan House at UIUC, and the Japanese Information Center. In recognition of his contributions to cultural exchange and Japanese arts, he was awarded the Cultural Achievement Award by the Japan America Society of Chicago. Today, he remains one of only three certified Urasenke instructors in the Chicagoland area and continues to teach at the Japanese Culture Center. The JAF is proud to have Omar Francis Sensei as one of our resident performers.

At the JAF Gala, guests will have the rare opportunity to experience a tea demonstration by Francis and witness the profound beauty of hospitality and presence in the Way of Tea.

We are happy to announce some of our wonderful performers for this year’s annual fundraiser! Today we are featuring Shodo (Calligraphy) expert, Hekiun Oda Sensei!

Hekiun Oda Sensei was born in 1963 and grew up in Kobe City, Japan, a place known for having many shodo masters living there at the time. Oda Sensei began studying shodo at the age of 5 under the shodo master Goun Katsura. Oda Sensei moved to Chicago in 1990, and since then has held many exhibitions and demonstrations at venues including Uniqlo, the Japan Information Center (JIC), and at our sister organization the Japanese Culture Center. In 2009 he established the Oda Japanese Calligraphy School and has taught over 100 students. Oda Sensei obtained the rank of Shihan (the highest rank in Shodo) in November 2011 from the Genshinkai, the Japanese Calligraphy Association in Japan. Since the JAF’s establishment, we have proudly had Oda Sensei as one of our resident artists.

For Oda Sensei, Shodo is a reflection of the calligrapher’s heart. He explores the beauty of this art form by reimagining his encounters with life and nature with thin or thick lines and powerful or gentle strokes. The moment just before he is ready to move his brush is powerful, as once a brushstroke is made, there is no going back.

Oda Sensei will be performing a live large brush shodo demonstration and attendees will have the opportunity to bid to take home this amazing piece of artwork, made live!
