Thresholds Thresholds is one of the oldest, largest providers of mental health and substance use treatment in Illinois.

Founded in 1959, Thresholds provides healthcare, housing, and hope for thousands of persons with mental illnesses and substance use conditions in Illinois each year. Through care, employment, advocacy, and housing, Thresholds assists and inspires people with mental illnesses to reclaim their lives. Thresholds is one of the oldest and largest providers of recovery services for persons with mental illnesses and substance use conditions in Illinois. We offer more than 33 innovative programs at nearly 100 locations throughout Chicago, the adjacent suburbs, and four surrounding counties. Services include assertive outreach, case management, housing, employment, education, psychiatry, primary care, substance use treatment, and research. Thresholds’ staff meets people where they are – out in the community. Offering services in a community-based setting makes them more accessible and effective and lessens the social exclusion that is often present in the lives of persons living with mental illnesses and substance use conditions. This allows our staff and clients to work on skills, clinical interventions, and recovery that allows them to live independent lives in their own neighborhoods

Our clients are all unique – coming from vastly different backgrounds and arriving with different needs, talents, and hopes. Each client works with our staff to set their own specific short-term goals and objectives, based on their needs, desires, and level of self-sufficiency. Recovery from mental health and substance use conditions is possible. Recovery is a process of finding and living a satisfying and meaningful life, as one defines it for oneself. We assist our clients as they work to reclaim a positive sense of self, and discover their own potential, gifts, and skills.

Housing is a human right!

Joann lives with schizophrenia and struggled with homelessness after losing her apartment. She experienced hospitalization and was living in a nursing home when she connected with Thresholds. Since then, she has gotten her own apartment and has been able to successfully manage her illness for seven years.

Last week, in front of City Hall, she shared her story as a powerful testament to the difference that supportive housing makes. Stories like this are why Thresholds remains committed to .

We proudly joined fellow advocates and providers like Chicago Coalition to End Homelessness, Deborah's Place, ONE Northside, and Center for Housing and Health at the launch of the Keep Chicago Housed campaign!

Thresholds South won big!

Last night, Thresholds Center for Mental Wellbeing - South received the AIA Chicago 2026 People's Choice Award for Best Healthcare Design.

While we're honored by the recognition, what makes this space truly special is what happens inside. Every day, our team provides comprehensive mental health and substance use services to ensure that communities on the Southside have the access to care, connection, and hope that they deserve.

Now, that care is complemented by an award-winning home!

Thank you to DESIGNBRIDGE | A Diversified Collaborative of Architects and Designers, Blackwood Group, our staff, and all of the partners who helped bring this vision to life. Together, we're building a stronger, healthier Southside.

We're using this to shout out our incredible summer interns!

Through University of Notre Dame's Bridge Program, students are paired with community organizations like Thresholds for hands-on summer experiences to support their educational goals.

This summer, Thea, Ady, Naomi, and Ella spent eight weeks working alongside Thresholds staff and clients, gaining valuable experience and perspective on community mental health and recovery.

At the end of the summer, each intern reflected on their experience and shared what they learned during their time with Thresholds. Read more about their unique perspectives and takeaways from the summer: https://bit.ly/4dnehm7

Support is just a call away.

September is Su***de Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and ensure people know that support is available when they need it. At Thresholds, we're proud to expand that support through our Mobile Crisis Response Teams, including MCRT South, now available 24 hours a day, five days a week.

When someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, our team provides compassionate, community-based care designed to meet people where they are. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, we are here to help.
