Last Friday, our young leaders spent the day at Plaza Huitzil, a beautiful neighborhood community garden! 🦋🌱

They learned about butterflies, their migration, wings, and life cycles with Claudia Sánchez of Mujeres en Espacios Verdes, then got their hands dirty picking seedlings and packing mulch to help care for the garden.

We ended the day with some well-earned pizza, a bonfire, and s’mores! 🍕🔥🍫

A big thank you to America/Union Impact for welcoming our youth and helping make these workshops possible. We love seeing our young people explore and care for the community spaces right in our neighborhoods! 💚

That’s a wrap on our first week of Fall 2026 ASM programming! 🍂✨

Our youth kicked things off with human bingo to break the ice and get to know one another, then jumped into ITP leadership trainings where they learned about community organizing and canvassing. Throughout orientation, They also got a little history lesson on ITP and After School Matters and went over program procedures and expectations.

A special thank you to the Back of The Yards Library and The Front Porch at Precious Blood for hosting us in their spaces. It was a great opportunity to introduce youth to welcoming neighborhood spaces where they can learn, connect, and feel at home. 💛

We’re so excited to see everything they’ll accomplish this fall!

Last Friday, Increase the Peace Chicago joined Peace & Education Coalition partners, the Chicago Department of Housing, and the Mayor’s Office for the official grand opening of United Yards in Back of the Yards. 💚

United Yards brings affordable housing, local businesses, and gathering spaces to our neighborhood, with new homes at 47th & Justine and 47th & Marshfield, and the investment in the Goldblatts & Rainbow buildings on 47th & Ashland.

At ITP, we believe safer communities start with investing in the places and resources that help people feel safe, supported, and rooted.

Our communities deserve investment. Our families deserve stability. And our young people deserve neighborhoods built with them in mind. 🌱

🌟 Civic Fellow Spotlight: Evelyn Rogel! 🌟

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate our former Summer Civic Fellow Evelyn Rogel for being selected as part of the inaugural Leadership, Education, Advocacy, & Democracy (LEAD) Student Fellowship with the Latino Policy Forum! 🎉

This summer, Evelyn played an important role in supporting and leading our young people at ITP. Now, she’ll continue building her leadership and advocacy skills while learning more about public policy and higher education across Illinois.

We love seeing our young leaders continue to grow, take on new opportunities, and bring their experiences into spaces where decisions are being made.

Congratulations, Evelyn! We’re proud of you and can’t wait to see what’s next!✨

ITP PlayStreets: Summer-Ween in Back of the Yards 🎃☀️

We spent the day out in the community with tamales, agua de jamaica, mini pumpkin painting, axe throwing, Connect Four, Tetris, and more. Neighbors also had a chance to connect with local resources and organizations throughout the event.

We love when community comes together, especially over good food, games, and a little early Halloween fun. Thank you to everyone who stopped by and spent part of their day with us, and to all the partners who helped make this block party happen. ✨
