On September 12, 1992, Dr. Mae Jemison launched aboard STS-47 as a science mission specialist—and became the first African American woman in space.

Her journey crossed disciplines and expanded possibilities. With a medical degree and an engineering background, she worked as a physician, served as a Peace Corps medical officer, became a NASA astronaut, and participated in life-science research aboard STS-47.

Her path is a powerful reminder: a career does not have to fit neatly into one lane. Medicine can connect with engineering, research, public service, space science, and the questions that inspire you most.
