What does it actually take to keep great engineers in this profession?

The SE3 Committee is tackling that question head-on at this year's symposium — Bridge the Gap: Connecting Engagement to Retention.

A half-day of real conversation about mentorship, retention, and building a structural engineering community that works across generations, career stages, and borders. Less theory, more tools you can actually use.

No one becomes a structural engineer by accident.

Somewhere along the way, someone had to say: "See that bridge? An engineer designed that to keep you safe."

For most kids, that moment never comes — structural engineering is the invisible profession. We design the buildings, bridges, and structures everyone relies on, but almost no one knows we exist.

The Future Builders Program is changing that. Starting in kindergarten.

In a single classroom visit at a St. Louis-area school, 57 kindergartners went from "never heard of it" to "I know what a structural engineer does" — in under an hour.

The profession that protects public safety deserves a seat at the table in every classroom. We're just getting started.

From strategic planning and leadership development to awards programs and organizational growth, this year’s NCSEA Leadership Week brought SEA and NCSEA leaders together for meaningful conversations about the future of the structural engineering community.

Breakout sessions explored topics including how to build successful awards programs, when SEAs should consider hiring staff, and how to approach strategic planning with long-term impact in mind. Most importantly, Leadership Week created space for collaboration, shared ideas, and relationships that continue strengthening SEAs nationwide.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the conversations shaping what’s next.
