Casa Central

Casa Central Casa Central transforms lives and strengthens communities with a special focus on Hispanics.

In the 1950’s, Polish, Yiddish, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Slovak, and Lithuanian languages could be heard along the side streets of West Town, Logan Square, and Humboldt Park. The steady migration of seasonal workers from Puerto Rico and Mexico brought a substantial population of Hispanics to Chicago, adding the Spanish language to this culturally diverse mix of Chicago’s inner city. In the midst of

a foreign culture, many immigrant workers soon found themselves unprepared for Chicago’s urban environment and struggled to find housing, clothing, food, and employment. By 1954, called to meet the need of newly arrived immigrants, a group of multi-denominational Hispanic pastors rented a storefront at 1671 West Ogden Avenue, in the heart of a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood. They called this center Casa Central Evangelica and began providing counseling and aid to those in need. As their scope and services expanded, the agency became known simply as Casa Central. Reverend Daniel Alvarez, a pastor and social worker in New York City, came on board as the Director of Casa Central in 1964 – a position he held for the next 25 years. At the time he arrived, Casa Central operated with budget of $26,000 and a staff of three employees, but the agency soon evolved from its humble beginnings. Casa Central has since grown into a cornerstone for the Hispanic community, with a staff of over 550 employees and a network of social service programs that reach nearly 20,000 individuals each year. Casa Central delivers an innovative spectrum of services, strengthening families and supporting growth at every stage, from children to seniors and offers day care and after school sessions that support children and youth and help them build a strong foundation., an array of services, including transitional housing for families experiencing homelessness, violence prevention and intervention, and employment training. Through these services, Casa Central strives to assist families to move towards self-sufficiency and an emotional and physical well-being. Our programs give older adults the opportunity to continue to live social and independent lives. Through our onsite Adult Wellness Center and Home Care Services program, older adults receive professional assistance in health and daily living activities. Children who received their first winter coats and doctor check-ups from Casa Central in the 1950s and 1960s have now grown into successful adults with their own children in Casa Central’s after-school programs and their parents in its senior programs. The agency has touched the lives of multiple generations of families in Chicago’s Hispanic population and continues to transform lives and strengthen communities.

The Adult Wellness Center (AWC) marked Older Americans Month this week with a lively and meaningful celebration. Participants proudly entered the common room wearing handmade “I’m a Champion!” sashes before gathering to hear speeches and personal stories highlighting the strength, contributions, and significance of older adults in our community.

Martin R. Castro, President and CEO of Casa Central, shared remarks expressing his gratitude to both participants and staff for the lasting positive impact they have made on families and society.

The event also featured special guest Mary Killough, Director of the Illinois Department on Aging, who addressed the group and offered her appreciation. In return, she was presented with a framed “Thank You” message signed by every AWC participant. The celebration concluded with an upbeat dance party.

Casa Central extends its heartfelt appreciation to older Americans everywhere for their enduring contributions and for continuing to enrich our communities with their wisdom, strength, and love.

Casa Central’s Earth Week 2026 went beyond gardening to celebrate culture, connection, and tradition—bringing families and community members together to reflect on what the earth represents: nourishment, healing, heritage, and home. Through shared conversations and hands-on experiences, participants explored how gardening reconnects them to their roots, from remembering family recipes to cultivating foods passed down through generations and reclaiming cultural traditions.

More than 300 grow kits—complete with seeds, pots, and starter supplies—were distributed, giving families the opportunity to continue these connections at home. One of the week’s most meaningful highlights was an intergenerational gardening event, where older adults and children gathered together to paint flowerpots, sharing stories, wisdom, and laughter. The experience underscored that gardening is more than planting—it is a way to pass down knowledge, preserve traditions, and strengthen community ties.

This initiative is part of our Farm to Casa project, which connects our community to fresh foods, nutrition education, and the land. Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating the earth, honoring food traditions, and growing community together. Special thanks to Adams & Son & Daughter Gardens and Chicago Grows Food

Volunteers from Hines, a real asset investment management firm, recently supported Casa Central's Earth Week. They worked together to assemble 300 grow kits, each containing seed-starting pots, seeds, and growing instructions. These kits were distributed to children, older adults, and families served through Casa Central's programs. Through hands-on activities, participants learned the fundamentals of planting and growing their own seeds, making the experience both educational and engaging as part of Casa Central’s Earth Week celebration.

Thank you Hines to for generously providing all the supplies, and to the dedicated volunteers who helped put these kits together for our community!

Casa Central was proud to stand alongside Allies United—an intersectional, multiracial, and multi-faith coalition of Illinois organizations working together to defend our shared rights and collective future.

The Allies United Breakfast was held at the Chicago Urban League, where we were graciously welcomed by President & CEO Karen Freeman-Wilson. The program featured powerful speakers, including Marty Castro, Casa Central’s President & CEO, who shared insights on the rights of our communities, the 14th Amendment, and the importance of protecting birthright citizenship.

At Casa Central, we believe deeply in the power of community collaboration. It was energizing to come together in a shared mission to protect and uplift our diverse communities. Thank you to the Chicago Urban League for hosting and to all the speakers who shared their expertise, experiences, and stories. We are truly stronger together.
