Chicago Bound - University of Chicago

Chicago Bound - University of Chicago Chicago Bound is a first year pre-orientation program hosted by the University Community Service Center and the Institute of Politics at UChicago

Chicago Bound is a weeklong student-led pre-orientation program sponsored by the University Community Service Center (UCSC) and the Institute of Politics (IOP) for 40 incoming first-year students to promote community awareness, social justice change and civic engagement. It involves contributing service projects to local organizations, visiting diverse neighborhoods, learning about urban issues, and meeting with community residents and leaders.

Still not sure why you should participate in ? Mahi Senthilkumar, one of our eight amazing group leaders for this coming year, faced a similar struggle. Here's why she chose Chicago Bound, the best pre-orientation program on campus:

"Before choosing Chicago Bound from the pre orientation programs that accepted me, I was a cynic, a serial slacktivist, and a stranger to leadership positions. TBH, I just wanted an excuse to move in early. However, Chicago Bound changed my life. CB challenged and energized and compelled me so much, I feel like I came out of the week completely reborn. It rewired the way that I think about school, politics, and people. Most importantly, it empowered me to become my best self at a critical point of transition in my life.

I chose Chicago Bound over UChicago Leads mostly because CB had been in operation longer. More importantly, when I emailed the director of UChicago Leads with my questions, they admitted that only CB had the capacity to integrate a focus service based leadership into its programming.

The choice definitely paid off. Qudsiyyah and Liz (who were both in my CB cohort) were a great source of support and inspiration during our successful campaign to be College Council representatives, a leadership role I had previously never imagined for myself.

Chicago Bound’s program structure acknowledges each individual’s unique background, creating an experience that showcases personal talent and cultivates genuine empathy and interest for the issues discussed. Some people fail to discover this sort of passion until far into adulthood. Some people never do. That’s what makes Chicago Bound a once in a lifetime opportunity. If you are on the fence about participating, I urge you to take the leap and take part in this program that simply refuses to disappoint."

Outgoing Student Government President Tyler Kissinger (CB '12) sat down with the Maroon and reflected on his time at UChicago, giving a shout out to Chicago Bound & the UCSC!

"I wasn’t really that interested in being publicly political, but I’d gotten really involved with the University Community Service Center (UCSC)…. I came from rural North Carolina, [and had] never really been in a city before. I’d never even been to Chicago before I came to move into UChicago; that was my first experience.

I did a lot of programs like Chicago Bound, Seeds of Justice, and then Summer Links at the UCSC. That got me really interested in the way that the school interfaces with community and…being someone from a rural area that had no idea how cities work, that was my initial entryway to the University of Chicago community.

UChicago will begin holding African Civ study abroad in Dakar, Senegal starting in Winter 2018 – thanks in no small part to the advocacy of students like Shae Omonijo (CB '14).

Check out Shae's piece, A Case for African Studies, which helped restore Civ offerings on the African continent!

Bringing back this picture to congratulate Roni Lubofsky (CB '14, GL '15) for being selected as an Assistant Resident Head (RA) for Wendt House and to celebrate Shaila Sundram (CB '13), Skylar Liam Spear (CB '13), and Kiran Misra (CB'13, GL, '14, PC '15) returning to their RA positions in Palmer, Halperin, and Flint Houses next year!

College housing decisions are being released today... However, the incoming Chicago Bound first years are soon to learn what our 83 program alumni already know: no matter what academic year dorm a CB participant is placed in, they will always be a part of Chicago Bound House, Best House!!!
