We can help families with no medical coverage apply for the states medical coverage program. The purpose of the CHIPRA Outreach Team is to assist families in need in obtaining health insurance, and helping to connect them with an accessible health care resource. The team visits families in a variety of locations including shelters, community centers, schools, and homes. We are trying to reach fami
lies that have fallen through the cracks of the health care system. Additionally, we are working to overcome barriers that prevent families from obtaining health coverage, including lack of transportation, transience, cultural and linguistic barriers, lack of knowledge and/or understanding of services, and stigma and fear associated with receiving public services. While our original target group was families living in shelters, we have found other high need areas where we have extended our services, including;
~Teens that are doubled up, couch surfing, sheltered, and on the streets – Chicago’s 2011 Point-In-Time Homeless Count documents increasing numbers of homeless teens
~Working class families affected by the economic downturn who are accessing public services for the first time and lack knowledge of available services/benefits,
~Families that are further away from the city and have more difficulty accessing services,
~Latino Families who may be afraid of accessing medical benefits for their children
Our CHIPRA Team has conducted over 100 presentations in the past year in a variety of locations including, Shelters, Libraries, Health and Service Fairs, Food Pantries, and Community Centers.
