SOUL Speaking Out As Unified Leaders Mentors work with 6-8th grade students at Langford Academy located in Chicago's South Side Englewood neighborhood.

Speaking Out as Unified Leaders (SOUL) mission is to provide youth with a positive outlet through the liberal arts and creativity, giving them the opportunity to explore various forms of expression and use these forms of expression to be positive agents of change within their communities. SOUL's goal is to increase the literacy skills of youth students through art-based learning, primarily focusin

g on the liberal arts, while simultaneously offering a safe space in which the students can explore who they are as both individuals and also future leaders. A select group of students from each grade, which include both students with the lowest and highest test scores in their class, are offered the wonderful and important learning experience our program offers. The students work on a range of topics such as learning literary devices, reading comprehension, ways to improve writing, goal-setting, and how to be an effective leader within their communities. It is our hope that, through our curriculum, every student is equipped with the skills needed to become problem solvers in today's society by using the arts to take a holistic approach to the issues plaguing their communities.
