Today we honor the founder of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship

Paul Jones, pacifist and socialist [4 September 1941]

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. [Matthew 5.9]

Perhaps because his feast day tends to coincide with Labor Day weekend, one hears little about this remarkable Bishop of the Missionary Diocese of Utah. As a follower of Jesus, Paul Jones believed one must live out one’s faith boldly, striving continually for justice and peace. Christians are called to “reclamation of the world from evil, and the development of perfection, tasks which in their very nature imply a continued struggle.” With the impending entry of the US into the Great War, Bishop Jones’ antiwar witness cost him greatly, forcing him to submit a letter of resignation in early 1918.

Long a committed pacifist, declaring war as unChristian at a meeting of the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FoR), he found his views under attack in Utah. As the nation began to clamor to intervene in Europe, Jones antiwar messages encountered opposition. Utahn leaders appealed to the House of Bishops to force Jones’ ouster. Jones welcomed the opportunity to articulate his position. While anxious to avoid the impression of squashing alternative views, the House of Bishops issued a statement support the US military. Jones eventually resigned in 1918, spending most of his later years as a chaplain at Antioch.
Paul Jones left a powerful legacy. Apart from his leadership role in FoR, he played an instrumental role in founding the Episcopal Peace Fellowship and Episcopal Relief & Development.

Collect: Merciful God, you sent your beloved Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Raise up in this and every land witnesses, who, after the example of your servant Paul Jones, will stand firm in proclaiming the Gospel of the Prince of Peace, our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

* Imagine some belief for which you were willing to risk career, family, life.
* In 1917 the House of Bishops censured Paul Jones; decades later they declared him a saint. When have you known the Church to reconsider earlier theological positions?
