Kicking off our third annual Back to School Festival! IMAN’s Organizing and Health Center teams joined Southwest Organizing Project and nearly a dozen community partners to bring the day to life, giving away more than 300 backpacks and school supplies alongside food, carnival games, and creative workshops. Our children deserve to begin the school year knowing that an entire neighborhood is behind them.

Alongside the hundreds who marched with us, we are also incredibly grateful for the many partner organizations who coordinated and led a series of workshops after to close our day. It was of the utmost importance for all of us that this day not just be a moment of gathering, but also a moment for connection and building.

These workshops include speed organizing conversations led by Muslim Civic Coalition with support by Sacred Roots Muslim Community, as well as a GOTV training and discussion led by them as well; a resource fair led by Council of Islamic Organization of Greater Chicago | CIOGC and Arise Chicago; performances by Freedom Dabka Group; ICE and detention center organizing workshop led by Kairos Center, and many more.

A special message from our brother Ahmed Muin in Gaza.

“We’re standing ten toes down, we’re not letting no rain turn us around!”

Hundreds are joining us from across the country to stand against the triple evils Dr. King called against 60 years ago: racism, militarization and materialist greed. Whether that takes the form of ICE raids and family separations, the gutting of voter protections, or destructive military complicity, we are gathered to call against them for the evil that they are.

As we prepare to march tomorrow, rain or shine, we ground ourselves in our intention and what motivates us to carry on Dr. King’s legacy of advocacy and liberation.

We ask you to join us in this reflection: what are you marching for?

More amazing artists who will be joining us at the National March to Marquette Park this Saturday.

We pray you are able to join us, rain or shine, marching to confront the evils that Dr. King called against 60 years ago—and ensuring that we carry his legacy by calling against those same evils today.
