So I did a deep dive into what the Scriptures say in response to the controversy over women being called pastors and whether they can function in that role. Honestly, I wanted to know more and study for myself and not just rest on what I believed from others teaching me.
My biggest complaint about this topic being a focus at the SBC this month is that I feel it's not the thing to go after when it comes to issues in the global church. There is so much abuse that needs to be addressed, systems of vetting that need to be in place, and entire departments needed to minister to the abused. And since most victims are women, we need to train up more females to do that work. If anything, they need to consider that a pastor is a title that carries authority, and people will recognize it to establish that first layer of trust.
My second concern is that Al Mohler, President of SBC, suggested women shouldn't function as pastors by giving commentary on sermons on podcasts. (I'm summarizing his quote.) This is very triggering to survivors who have been silenced and are finding their voice. Most won't want to, but it's the suggestion to control women's voices that is offensive. Historically, men have oppressed women, so it's not a good look.
If the Bible says what Mohler says... then I'll obey God. But that's not what I found when I looked at the Greek and historical context. If you're about to quote me 1 Timothy 2:12 and 1 Corinthians 14:24, I hope you'll read this first. I don’t disagree with one role being only for men. Although I did find it in debate among many respected scholars.
