Euchre Club of Chicago

Euchre Club of Chicago The Euchre Club of Chicago is a non-profit social club for like-minded people who enjoy playing cards and meeting new people. We play on Sunday nights.

The Euchre Club currently meets only on Sunday nights; we play 5 games of euchre - whoever has the highest score after 5 games wins a prize! No partner is needed to play - come as you are! You can sign up for the first game with a friend if you like, but all partners rotate after each game.

It's always St. Patty's Day at Gracie O'Malley's!

As a reminder, our Spring Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, April 2nd starting at 3 p.m. at Gracie O’Malley’s - Edgewater! This will be a partners’ tournament (in other words, you will play all 5 games with the same partner.) We will be more than happy to play matchmaker if you don't have a partner in mind! If you are interested in attending, please either DM us or email us at [email protected] for details. Let us know if you are coming as soon as possible - there is limited space and the deadline for signing up for the tournament is Saturday, April 1st!

In case you haven’t heard, we are back up and running! Join us every Sunday at Gracie O’Malley’s Edgewater (6334 N. Clark). We start gathering around 5:30 and play starts promptly at 6. See you there!

06/26/2021

Hey folks! With the world reopening, so are we! We're pleased to announce that we'll be back at Gracie O'Malley's, 6334 N. Clark St., on Sundays at 6. Just like we were back in March a year ago! This will start TOMORROW, June 27!

For now Sunday is the only reopened day--we'll work on other dates and venues as needed and as available. (We all have day jobs--bear with us.)

We'll start play at 6--gathering and sign-up will start at 5:30. See you Sunday!

Hi Euchre Club folks! I'm grateful that so many of you are still visiting our page. It goes without saying that what we do (play cards in bars) is still impossible. Even during that window when the bars in question were open, playing cards in them was a no-go (and a horrible idea even if it had been possible).

It'll take some time, but we're still very cautiously optimistic that we'll be back one day. In the mean time, wear your mask! And smile--it really does show in your eyes. And never trump your partner's ace (unless one of the several exceptions applies).

More EuchreChat. This is one with a fairly clear correct answer--yet an answer that not every euchre player knows! Suppose you're sitting to the left of the dealer, holding the ace of hearts, the king of clubs, and the 9, J and K of diamonds. Dealer picks up a spade and goes alone. What do you lead?

07/09/2020

Introducing EuchreChat, in which I'll try each week to post a question about euchre strategy or tactics. Today's question: You hold the A Q 9 of hearts, the A of spades, and the Q of clubs; you're sitting first position (to the dealer's left). The king of spades is up, and is turned down. What do you do?

(a) Call hearts and lead the ace of hearts;
(b) Call hearts and lead a low heart;
(c) Call hearts and lead the ace of spades;
(d) Call hearts and lead the club;
(e) Pass.

It's more fun if you say why! (I have a preferred play here, but I'm not sure everyone agrees.)

For coronavirus-related reasons, we've been on hiatus since mid-March, of course. But we just wanted you folks to know that we're still out there, and we look forward to the day when we can safely see you all again over a game of cards. We obviously don't yet know when or how that will happen. But in the meantime, stay safe and sane out there!

Thank you to everyone who attended “Grandma” John Holtschlag’s memorial tournament yesterday! John was always very humble, but it would have meant the world to him to see us all come out in his honor!

Here are the winners:
1st place - Yamuna Reddi
2nd place - Brian Fliflet
3rd place - Tom Corless
4th place - Spencer Peeler
Last place - Jose Rios

As promised, there was a raffle! We were surprised that Grandma didn’t posthumously win the grand prize herself! Instead, that honor went to Jerry Tasch!
