Brothers and sisters,
It is with great sadness to announce the passing of former Laborers' Local 4 President William "Bill" Hosty on August 4, 2026. Bill was appointed Auditor of Local 4 in April 1982 and started as a Business Agent the following month. In April 1983, Bill was elected Local 4 President and he was reelected every term until his retirement in August 2008. Bill's undeniable passion as an organizer helped Local 4's reputation as a powerhouse of a labor organization in the city of Chicago.
The members loved seeing Bill at the hall both before and long after his retirement. When talking with Bill, members always sensed that familiar feeling that they were exactly where they needed to be. Bill didn’t stand for contractors undercutting the workplace standards the Union has long-fought for. He was a staunch advocate for the Local 4 membership and preached the value of organizing daily. It's no coincidence that in Bill's tenure as Local 4 President and District Council Delegate, the Chicago Laborers' District Council's number of signatory contractors grew nearly 500 contractors.
In 2001, Bill was presented with the James Connolly award by the Irish American Labor Council of Chicago. Bill was a passionate Union Leader, an unselfish, caring man, loving uncle, adoring husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather – and just as important, a friend to many of you. The labor movement has lost a champion of working people, but Local 4 will carry on its advocacy and passion for organizing in Bill's honor. Please keep Bill and the Hosty Family in your prayers.
