Today, Burst Into Books is coming together with our village for our READ TO RISE Online Giving Campaign, and we have one BIG goal:

We are calling on our community to invest in the future of Burst Into Books and help us continue creating opportunities for children, families, and communities through literacy, education, and the arts.

💙💛 THIS is what building community looks like!

Yesterday, we had an AMAZING time at BIB Community Arts Space with the incredible Arlene Chandler of Spectrum Family Talks!

In celebration of Down Syndrome Awareness Month, we welcomed families of ALL abilities, including families raising children with disabilities and neurodivergent children, for a beautiful day of connection, joy, and community!

From coloring and games to family resources and meaningful conversations, this gathering was about so much more than activities. It was about creating a welcoming, inclusive space where families feel SEEN, SUPPORTED, and CELEBRATED!

A special THANK YOU to the amazing people and organizations who helped make this day so memorable!

Y'all know at Burst Into Books, we believe that literacy is more than just reading words on a page. It's about creating opportunities, building community, and changing lives!

That's why we're inviting our entire village to join us for our READ TO RISE Telethon & Online Giving Campaign!

We're bringing together community leaders, educators, advocates, and supporters for an afternoon of powerful conversations, community connections, and fundraising to support the 5th Annual Words of Wonder Literary Festival!

1:00 PM | Unity Village Conversation

Let's talk about the power of community! We'll explore what it means to come together as a village, invest in our neighborhoods, and create opportunities for our children and families to thrive.

We are excited to talk to Chandler and Joiner about the amazing resources that are available for families with children with disabilities.

3:30 PM | The Importance of Reading Conversation

Why does reading matter? How do we cultivate a love of literacy in our homes, schools, and communities? We're diving into the importance of reading and the collective responsibility we share in helping our children become confident, lifelong readers.

We are excited to engage with Duane Davis and Brown in this powerful conversation.

We reached our Day 1 goal of $1,000!

I can’t tell you how much it means to know that our village has our back. Thank you to everyone who donated, shared our campaign, sent words of encouragement, and helped spread the word.

We are confident that together we can reach our October goal of $25,000!

The truth is, we cannot continue doing this work without the support of our community. Every dollar adds up and helps Burst Into Books continue pouring into our children, families, schools, and community.

Yesterday, we officially launched our fundraising campaign, and we’ve already raised $720 from 14 amazing supporters!

Our goal is to raise $25,000 by the end of October, and to get there, we need to average about $1,000 a day.

So today, I’m asking our village to help us hit $1,000—or MORE—before the day ends!

What happens when we intentionally invest in the next generation? On Wednesday, October 14 at 6 PM, we’re bringing together incredible Chicago leaders who are doing exactly that.

Join us for a powerful virtual conversation featuring Vondale Singleton, Dominicca Washington, James Fields, Kenneth Speller, and Darryca Brim, moderated by Burst Into Books founder Jurema Gorham.

We’ll talk mentorship, access, opportunity, and what it truly takes to empower young people to dream bigger, lead boldly, and create change in their communities.

Today was a beautiful reminder that the next generation is DOPE.

We had an amazing group of 4th and 5th graders from St. Barnabas School volunteer at BIB Community Arts Space! They created encouragement cards filled with affirmations and loving notes that we’ll share with customers and community members during our programs.

And of course, I couldn’t let them leave Roseland without a glazed donut from Old Fashioned Donuts!

Each student also received a book to take home, and before leaving, one of the students asked if they could do a read-aloud together. 🥹

Ms. Wanakee led the group in reading and discussing the story—and the fact that the moment was completely student-initiated made it even more special.

THIS is —service, literacy, community, and joy.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with St. Barnabas. Today reminded me that the best days are ahead of us because this generation is absolutely amazing. 💛
