Centro Comunitario Juan Diego Centro Comunitario Juan Diego (CCJD) is a non-profit community center in South Chicago. In 1996, it obtained its 501(c)3 status as a non-profit organization.

Some of its Programs include; CEDA (light and gas assistance program), Breast Health, Diabetes Education, prevention and management, Food Pantry, and much more. Centro Comunitario Juan Diego was founded in January 1994 by a group of eight Latina women. These women joined in their efforts to fight for a safer, cleaner, and healthier community. Then and now, the underlying goal of all their efforts

was a recognition of the need to develop self-empowerment and self-determination, especially among women in the Latino community. Centro Comunitario Juan Diego first set up shop on the front porch of co-founder and Executive Director Olivia Hernandez. In 1994, Centro Comunitario Juan Diego was recognized by the state of Illinois as a community agency. Centro Comunitario Juan Diego is the result of these women’s community activism. These early founders exemplified dedication, hard work, resourcefulness, and a desire for reform - all characteristics of a leader. From its inception Centro Comunitario Juan Diego has been an organization that serves as an example of leadership and civic participation for the community of Southeast Chicago.

Cindy McMahone and the Secretary of State Jessy White’s office have been adopting families for Christmas for the past fifteen years through the center. This year Cindy and her family were generous to five families with many beautiful gifts. On behalf of all the families, previous and current, we would like to send our most sincer appreciation for making Christmas joyous and hopefull for many children.

Before the year is over it’s important to CCJD that we recognize a few people, the Chicago Police Department, Old Saint Mary’s Church, Herminia Vana, American legion Post 1017, and World Vision, because through their generosity we were able to help distribute coats, shoes, care items, and school items to our new immigrant neighbors.
