Living Room Music by John Cage 🛋️

…recorded in a very interesting living room. Anyone recognize this space from another video we released a couple years ago??

Hard to believe we recorded this 15 years ago. It was a LONG day. We recorded audio and video at the same time, and had to pause for lawn mowers, airplanes, cars, and more. It was hot outside, and we had to turn the AC off anytime we were shooting because it was too loud. We’d shoot until we couldn’t stand the heat anymore, then crank the AC. It took us all day to record this 7 minute piece — and this last movement “The End” was recorded after the sun was down.

You can now watch our recording of the whole piece on our YouTube channel 🙌📺

Our final Currents Creative Partner is Japanese-born composer Asuka Kakitani, who draws deep inspiration from nature, transforming her visions into evocative musical narratives. Often programmatic, her compositions reflect imagination and personal perspective, exploring an inner world where memory, emotion, and sound intertwine. She has been described as “a musical impressionist and supreme colorist” (Hot House Magazine) whose music is an “overflowing world of inspirational melody” (DownBeat Magazine). Kakitani’s work spans jazz large ensembles, chamber groups, vocal music, electroacoustics, and film scoring. Her work has been recognized by organizations such as the New Music USA Creator Fund, Blackbird Creative Lab, McKnight Foundation, Jerome Fund for New Music (now ACF | Create), Brooklyn Arts Council, and the Minnesota State Arts Board, among others.

Asuka was recently honored with a 2026 McKnight Fellowship from the Composers Forum! Congratulations to Asuka on this well-deserved accomplishment, and don’t miss her Currents piece, “There Used to Be a Christmas Tree Farm Near My House,” debuting June 11 & 12 at Constellation!

Our next Currents Composer is Sebastian Zhang! Sebastian is a composer-percussionist unapologetically embracing the electric nostalgia of a younger generation, creating music that ranges from glittering chiptune riffs to math-rock grooves to clattering echoes of electronic distortion. An avid player of the asalato/kashaka, Sebastian advanced to the top 4 in the 2025 ASALATRIBE World Asalato Online Battle, and attained top 8 in competition at the 2024 ASALATO NIGHT Freestyle Battle in Kyoto, Japan.

Highlights include performances by organizations including Sandbox Percussion, the Living Earth Show, the the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Michigan, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. His works have been performed at events such as the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, the Round Top Festival Institute, the International Double Reed Society Conference, and the National Conference on Percussion Pedagogy. Sebastian holds a BM in Music Studies from the University of Texas at Austin, studying under Ivan Trevino, Omar Thomas, Yevgeniy Sharlat, and Thomas Burritt. In Fall 2025, he began an MM in Music Composition at the Yale School of Music.

“wild ink crossroads” will have its world premiere on June 11 & 12 at Currents: grab your tix @ https://www.thirdcoastpercussion.com/event/currents-at-constellation-7/

CURRENTS is just over a month away: meet this year’s creative partners! First up is Dan McGee: hailing from Pennsylvania, Dan is a composer and percussionist whose work explores the intersection of classical minimalism and electronic experimentation. Drawing from a wide spectrum of influences—including voice, pop, rap, jazz, and the surrounding natural and digital worlds—his music seeks to balance structure with spontaneity and clarity with chaos.

Dan studied percussion with Keith Aleo at Interlochen Arts Academy, and privately with composers Timo Andres and Christopher Cerrone in New York City before attending the New England Conservatory, where he continued his composition studies with John Mallia and Kati Agócs. His work has been presented at Carnegie Hall, Jordan Hall, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Brown Hall, and Yale’s Norfolk New Music Workshop, and he has collaborated with NYC dancer Kenichi Kasamatsu and ensembles including Holes in the Floor cello quartet, the New York Youth Symphony, and the Norfolk New Music Ensemble.

Dan now lives and composes out of SpectraSound, a recording studio nestled in the woods of Pennsylvania. His creative practice is informed by his background in percussion, love for all music, and general technology. By day, he works in tech, helping protect organizations from nation-state threat actors.

“lost in a mind, with approximate directions” will have its world premiere on June 11 & 12 at Currents: grab your tix @ https://www.thirdcoastpercussion.com/event/currents-at-constellation-7/
