Many states have considered allowing dental assistants to perform supragingival scaling, sometimes under the title of Oral Preventive Assistant (OPA), as a solution to the ongoing workforce challenges.

But lost in some of the discussion is: what do dental assistants think about this? 💭

So, we asked! And here's what we found. 👇

Overall, dental assistants were mixed in their support and interest. About half expressed support for the new OPA role and interest in pursuing it, if available. The other half were opposed or unsure.

Dental assistants also said that if they take on scaling duties, proper training, education, credentials, and increased compensation are imperative.

Just three letters — CDA — can make a big difference in your career. 🚀

Ashley Mickens, CDA, worked as a surgical dental assistant for more than a decade before earning certification.

Since becoming a Certified Dental Assistant, Ashley says she's earned more trust and responsibility at her practice. She's now a lead dental assistant and has the responsibility training her fellow dental assistants in the practice.

"You already thought you have that trust [from your practice], just having that knowledge and that experience," says Mickens. "But [certification] shows them, 'Hey, I'm serious about it, and I'm gonna take this to a next level,' so they'll give you more responsibility, more trust."

🚨 We are now accepting applications for the annual ADAA-DANB Scholarship!

The ADAA/DANB Scholarship is open to all American Dental Assistants Association members in good standing. This scholarship is awarded annually to dental assistants who demonstrate a strong commitment to career growth and lifelong learning in the dental assisting profession.

Applications are due by October 23.
