Sisters in Cinema

Sisters in Cinema I began this project because I only knew one African American woman director's name when I started film school. I didn't even know what she looked like.

We are a Chicago based non-profit with an inclusive mission to create a world where all Black women, girls and gender non-conforming media makers have equal opportunities to create and thrive. Even though I knew the name Julie Dash, I had never seen any of her films and had no idea why or how she became a filmmaker. I learned that I was not alone. I heard over and over again, "I didn't know there

were any black women filmmakers." So, I set out to find my sisters in cinema. My curiosity became a website, my doctoral dissertation and a documentary. This project will continue to evolve to include other Black girls, women and gender non-conforming people's work; in the future, look for information about shorts, experimental films, animations, multi-media, and documentaries directed by African American girls, women and gender non-conforming folks and folks from the African Diaspora. In the meantime, I hope you will enjoy what I've learned. Your Sister in Cinema,
Yvonne Welbon
